HOUSE NAMES ANYONE?

Narrowed down our search to three, but they all have names that are horrid - combinations of peoples' names. Any ideas?

Do they have numbers too? Some have both, so you could just use the number. Not sure how you go about changing a house name. Maybe have a look on the Royal Mail website, see whether they have any suggestions. Or collar your local postie and ask?

Every local authority has a street names and numbering officer (part of the planning dept). Look on your LA website.

MuchLessTiredNow · 22/06/2008 15:46

thanks for this - any ideas of nice names?

Try this for some suggestions

Not 'Cat Haven'.

I went to view a house with this name recently and it had a heady aroma of tom cat urine

MuchLessTiredNow · 22/06/2008 17:29

mmmm... nice!

Our present address has a weirdy name, that we only found out about when the council tax bill came.
Apparently it's called 'Florida.'

It was owned by an American lady for a very long time and she named it.

I got quite fond of the name but never used it as it was too confusing. 'Sorry madam, you live where??'

I made a wooden sign and everything...

We're now moving to a street which is meant to be named after an ancient king but is actually two old codgers' names joined together.

See if you can guess it!

But at least the house doesn't have a dodgy name this time.

Alfred?

TigerFeet · 22/06/2008 19:59

Ethelbert?

LIZS · 22/06/2008 20:32

You can change it by applying to local Council who check with Royal Mail that no others have too similar an address.

Our house was built before street numbers, although it now has a number. It is called Stretton House which sounds very grand, I think.

Fizzylemonade · 23/06/2008 16:23

I feel sad for those named Hill View which did mean at one time they did have a view of a hill but now all they see is the housing estate.

probablyaslytherin · 23/06/2008 23:26

I was told that I could call my house what I liked. If I was to change it, the Post Office wouldn't care, they said. What they did care about was my house number. That shouldn't change.

This is in Scotland. Don't know if England's different.

Twinklemegan · 23/06/2008 23:30

I think the Post Office would definitely care if your house is only known by the name.
In my old job I used to check through weekly planning lists, without the aid of grid references to find the locations. Unrecorded name changes in rural areas were the bane of my life!

Flum · 23/06/2008 23:32

Halfpenny

A play on house prices.....

Twinklemegan · 23/06/2008 23:33

Oh, and I agree combinations of people's names are the most rubbish thing ever! My house is called Sheep.

Twinklemegan · 23/06/2008 23:33

In Gaelic.

Flum · 23/06/2008 23:41

We don't have a number as our house one of the older ones on street and it is very annoying as we are on a High St so no one can ever find us. Tried to slip a number in between what there is and it would be something like 143d. DH wouldn't have it as said it sounded like we lived in a bedsit. He is a bit of a snob. I thought it quite funny. Post Office said they couldn't allocate a number anyway. Also said they found it easily. unfortunately their competitors have more trouble.

Kindersurprise · 23/06/2008 23:45

Here in Germany if they need to add a number they add a half. So between no. 16 High Street and 17 High Street you have 16 1/2 High Street

MuchLessTiredNow · 24/06/2008 21:15

So what is gaelic for sheep??? LOVE the idea of halfpenny btw!!!!!!

My uncle used to live in a cottage called Toad Hall

I grew up in a cottage called Hammers - cos it was the old blacksmiths.

Like 'Hill View' I think its sad that every new housing development is called Oak Ridge, or Willow Meadows - which just highlights what they knocked down to build it there in the first place.

Twinklemegan · 24/06/2008 21:40

Caora or Caorach depending if it's singular or plural. I think that's the difference. In that case, we're plural.

MuchLessTiredNow · 25/06/2008 15:19

Ooooh, I like Toad Hall. Yes I don't like the names like Willow Cottage etc if they are clearly not a cottage or near willows etc - thinking along the same lines as you. Maybe I should just call it 'UglyNewHouseButAllWeCanAfford' or, after 20 years in the military 'DunMovin'

How about a surname type name, as if you're calling the butler? Hargreaves... Pemberton...

Or have you got any nice old fashioned names in your family?
