How can I get rid of this water mark?

I had a leak in the roof which is now repaired but I’m left with this water mark on the oak beam. I wondered if anyone has any tips on how I can fix it (or at least fade it somewhat). The wood is completely dry now, it is just staining. I’ve read about mayonnaise (!?) but really don’t want to make it any worse by doing the wrong thing!
many thanks 😊

I think oxalic acid is supposed to be good for this kind of stain. But I'd test on a small, relatively inconspicuous area first. I'd be worried about mayonnaise leaving a greasy mark.

Thanks @MotherofPufflings I’ll have a google of oxalic acid. I have the same concerns re mayonnaise!!

Could you make it look more organic like growth rings or knots in the wood using a bit of darker stain if you can't get the marks out. Try on a hidden bit first. Or stain the whole beam darker more like the wood behind.

Sand it out.

Stain to colour match the other beams.

Sand it out.

it is a water stain, it is not a surface layer "discolouration" that can be sanded out

PrincessofWells · 20/05/2026 18:06

Why ask then, have you tried because ime it is pretty much the only thing that works?

caringcarer · 20/05/2026 18:32

It sounds odd but put a slightly damp tea towel over it and iron over it. The iron draws the water out. It does work but I know it sounds a bit mad.

Lots of great ideas to try! Thanks everyone. I might have a go with the iron first tomorrow if I can find an extension lead long enough!

I don't think I'd even notice that mark if I was visiting your house. My brain would tell me it was part of the wood. Very beautiful beams.

trakehner · 21/05/2026 10:23

@ScrambledTofuNeedsKalaNamak thank you they are so beautiful and I have loved them every day for 16 years (the beams are in my bedroom) but sadly I am selling and downsizing so want to tackle all the little jobs that might put potential buyers off. If I can’t easily remedy it, I will leave it as I guess it does add to the history of the house (v old!) in the same way a charred section of beam in another area points to a fire there at some point, maybe hundreds of years ago!
