What could I put in place of a bookcase in my living room

Decided to get rid of all the books I have as I only read things on my kindle now and feels also some look a little childish (I have had them since my teens some of them). I was going to get rid of the bookcase anyway but replace it with another, now I’m wondering what I can put there instead. Also ideas for items to put on the shelves (don’t want to remove them as would then need to redo the wall behind). Have attached a pic of wider living room so you can see the kind of vibe I’m going for. ChatGPT suggested a small chair but it would look silly with the existing furniture

I think books are seen to be a measure of the occupant's culture and I used to love having wall to wall bookcases full of books. I only read on kindle now and don't miss the paper books at all.
Bookcases are good for plants as well...

In that case my culture is a mix of Jackie Collins, Jilly Cooper, forensic science, Shakespeare and a French dictionary 😂

Ahh you and @kleenx are making me have a crisis about the books (and this is from someone who resisted a kindle for so long because I wanted the physical books to read) I think I'll keep it but move it to the office upstairs...

I think that sounds like a lovely compromise ❤️

Jilly Cooper is the Queen. I kept a handful of old books which had sentimental value and that includes the Jilly Cooper ones. Although when I decided to re-read after watching Rivals the print was too small and I had to be buy a kindle version.

A harp would look rather nice!

Failing that, I’d have shelves to match the ones on the right and a plant underneath.

I'd put something like a small table with a lamp on, or a log basket with blankets rolled up in it, or move the 2 lanterns on that side so they fill the space a bit more.

I'd get a smaller TV and move it from the window, it just looks like an after thought stuck in front of the window. I know you've ordered an L shaped sofa, but I would orient it to look at the fireplace/TV rather than the TV in front of the window.

Lego flowers all the way 😂

Green looks good with gold. I would put the bookcase upstairs, paint the shelves on the right green to match, declutter the photos, put a built in green cupboard under the painted shelves, and put a large plant in a big gold pot on the left. Do you use the fire? If not then a small table with lamp with the big plant, but table, lamp and plant pot need to compliment each other.

I love your room! Please don’t get rid of all your books though… Won’t you miss any? Do they hold special memories for you?

There’s nothing wrong with that! Books remind you of a certain time in your life.

You can’t get rid of Jilly!

I’d put a set of antique wooden drawers there. With a lamp, plant and picture frames on the top and a picture or gilt mirror on the wall behind.

Please don't get rid of that lovely bookcase 😔 A home without a bookcase is so cold and soulless. It's a perfect spot for a bookcase as well.

Totally agree. A home without a few books on display is soulless!

I only ever read on kindle now but can’t imagine getting rid of the books I own - they have reached ornament status. I have attractive bookcases that need books but I have thinned them out so I only display ‘worthy’ books and have plenty of space for framed photos etc.

We have the same arrangement of fireplace and alcoves. On one side there is a fitted bookcase with a lower cupboard across the whole alcove. On the other side a lower cupboard with an antique lamp.
The books do not go across the whole shelves, but are arranged with other items, it makes the effect lighter.
