Putting kitchen cupboards on a stud wall - what rawl plugs? or should I use somethingelse?

I need to put 6 cupboards onto a stud wall - they won't have too much weight in them

The bottom two are fairly easy - I can rest them on the skirting board to get them straight

But the top 4....should I nail a baton onto the wall to get the bottom line straight?

& what on earth do I use to fix them

  1. those little grey wall plugs that look like arrows
  2. those metal ones with the wings
  3. those grey whacking great plastic screws
  4. something else??

Well after the palava of putting up our bathroom cabinet which took a total of 4 hours just to put it on the wall....

these were very effective but a bit fiddly...but make sure you get ones that are long enough. DP bought 50mm and needed 80mm...

Our (amateur) kitchen fitter actually used these I think.

Wall anchors, SMS's 2nd link.

The man in the shop has told me to put batons onto the studs

That sounds complicated

You need special plasterboard fixings otherwise it could fall down.SMS second ones are good

KatyMac · 21/06/2008 16:45

They are what I was going to buy

But I was persuaded into batons

Batons are probably what a builder would use although they would have to fix the batons with plugs like those

KatyMac · 21/06/2008 16:55

Apparently (what do I know) the batons need to be screwed to the studwork

So I use that little detector thingie to find the studs

Gosh I am not looking forward to tomorrow

The problem with fitting wooden batons (if that is what you are doing) is that they will be 1" x 2" probable, so your cupboard will stand out by an extra inch - which is fine if you are fitting them into a recess, with a wall either end, but if not you will have to fill the gap between the wall and the unit with a filler panel or similar.

My cupboards were fitted by professional and they used these metal bar type things (only a few cms long) with a matching hook style bar thing to slip into it - can't remember if the bar went on the wall or cupboard though.

(I typed this ages ago and doorbell rang, so this may have already been discussed)

KatyMac · 21/06/2008 18:35

They are stand alone - there are no filler bits

It is for DD's bedroom and run along one wall

But thanks for the heads up - if I had been fitting a kitchen it would have really mattered

OK sorry misunderstood, the baton is temporary to get a straight line like you do in tiling or to spread the weight of hanging the cupboard onto?

If they are new kitchen cupboards they should come with the fittings as I described in previous which a) need to be fitted into a bit of the studwork/wooden frame inside the wall that was erected to screw the plasterboards onto.

This may not be possible because they studwork (which is a wooden frame) may not be in the right place to fix your cupboard to.

So you may have to find to uprights and screw a length of baton between them to give you a horizontal to screw into.

or b) need to be fixed to the hollow wall with those metal anchor type things second link in sms post.

SAme goes for wall hung cupboards (non kitchen), unless they have a recessed back - so the sides of the cupboard stick out past the back of the cupboard - they will still hang proud of the wall if you hang them on an external (fixed to the wall so you can see it as opposed to studwork) baton and you will have a gap between cupboard and wall.

I'm going with th egap between cupboard & wall

this will make the cupboards more stable and less likely to rip holes in the plasterboard (?)

It's going to be a very long day tomorrow
