does anyone know of a product which can act as a barrier to water
after cleaning the perspex? shower doors and the bathroom tiles please,
in a very hard water area creating limescale - I’m wondering why I’m cleaning
and polishing yet it still looks as though it needs a good scrub

it isn’t possible to have a water softener fitted or we would

Yes car glass cleaning stuff. Is brilliant.
the last I bought was Rain X two in one glass cleaner

Theres a product that you spray on to make water bead off. I think car detailers use it.
I've also read a tip somewhere about spraying the screen with furniture polish once clean to do the same. Not tried either myself. I tend to use Viakal, squeegee and micro fibre cloths. Would love a water softener myself.

method shower spray in passionfruit is good

we use the orange one! but it doesn’t silicone either the expensively tiled shower or the shower doors - they aren’t glass, guess they are something plastic
we have a young sturdy cleaner lady who applies elbow grease twice monthly and now sees these doors as a challenge, two days after she has been they look just the same, its dispiriting
It’s a great shower
I’m considering hanging shower curtains inside the doors or moving

Citric Acid.

Use a Karcher after every shower, on tiles and screen

How long between each application. Shower is used twice a day.

I recommend Astonish white vinegar with zesty lemon.

I use karcher or similar after every shower, no sprays worked, i have the method shower sprays but i don't find it very good.
Viakal is great, but it is toxic so i try to use it once a month only

thanks everyone for the replies

Not preventative, but very effective for removal - white vinegar in water applied with a cloth. Leave for a few minutes and rinse and dry. Sparkling.

I do it once a week, low effort and maximum result.

Our shower mixer tap was really limescaled up when we moved in. We clean shower after every use with Aldi bathroom cleaner & the limescale reduced gradually & now gone completely!

If a water softener isn't possible, I'd try a hydrophobic treatment on the shower screen after giving it a really thorough clean. They help water bead up and leave fewer limescale marks. For tiles, a penetrating sealer can help if they're natural stone or unglazed. I've got hard water too, and the biggest improvement for me was using a squeegee after every shower; it only takes a minute but really cuts down on limescale buildup.

DontKillSteve · 15/07/2026 06:28

I give it a quick zap with the squeegee after every use, it helps. Then viakal. Will try the car beading stuff though.

CointreauVersial · 15/07/2026 15:24

Following with interest. Problem is, our shower cabinet is curved, so using a squeegee is nigh on impossible (or it would take so long I'd end up in a major sweat and would need another shower).

Do any of those post-shower sprays actually work? I used to use the Method one, but it just swapped limescale marks for greasy streaks.

berkshire2434 · 16/07/2026 04:11

The secret to stopping that endless cycle is a hydrophobic (water-repelling) barrier. Because glass and perspex are actually quite porous on a microscopic level, minerals cling to them easily.
Once you've scrubbed the limescale off one last time, apply Rain-X Shower Door Water Repellent or HG Shower Screen Protector. They seal the pores so water beads and rolls straight off instead of drying and leaving deposits. Keep a squeegee in the shower to quickly swipe it down after use, and you'll barely have to clean it

Caseyomar · 07/08/2026 08:06

If you're in a hard water area, prevention is the key. I'd use a squeegee after every shower and apply a hydrophobic glass treatment to help water bead off the shower screen.

For the tiles, use a pH-neutral cleaner rather than anything abrasive. Royale Stones has LTP Porcelain Tile Cleaner, which is a good option for regular maintenance if you have porcelain tiles.

There's no product that completely prevents limescale, but these steps make it much easier to keep on top of it.

Dobeebeedah · 07/08/2026 20:10

Change the plastic to glass shower screen and then any limescale cleaner will do the job well.
