Extension just for a WC

Has anyone done a tiny side extension just to add a WC?

We considered doing the full side extension but don’t think we’d gain much (unless make it double storey). Just looking to squeeze in a downstairs WC for guests mostly and a second toilet.

by the scale of quantities I know it’s not the best value but I also don’t want to go down the big rabbit hole of extensive works

If you can afford a full extension, I’d suck up the hassle. In for a penny, in for a pound I say

Surprisednotusedb4 · 30/04/2026 15:34

How many live on the property?

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 30/04/2026 15:42

My dm had this. Works really well.

I’ve seen one that added a porch with toilet to side. I can’t see exactly how but their front door is on the side of the house.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 30/04/2026 16:01

Is there anywhere else you could squeeze in a WC? I spent £2.5k to turn the understairs cupboard into a toilet. Best money I ever spent and way cheaper than an extension.

I did a small extension but it gave us a slightly bigger hall (we had to do it this way to get the doors to open in the right directions) and a five foot square room which has a 90cm quadrant shower in it, a loo and a basin. It really is very small.

Nourishinghandcream · 30/04/2026 16:26

As a PP suggested, can you incorporate a toilet into a new front (or rear) porch so you benefit not only from a loo, but a useful space that transitions from inside/outside?
We did this, taking away our old (very useful) porch and going both out & across to increase the (fully enclosed) porch and a VERY generously sized toilet.

One thing I really hate is toilets crammed into corners, under stairs, squeezed between rooms etc just to provide a loo with little thought of how it is going to be used or what it is like when being used.
Tiny space with tiny and/or recessed sink or (even worse) a cistern/sink. Opens directly into living room, dining room or kitchen when it really wants to be accessed through a utility, hallway etc.

JustGiveMeReason · 30/04/2026 16:32

I haven't done it but would certainly consider it.
A downstairs toilet is SO valuable, and such a plus point in a house.
Obviously without knowing anything about the layout of your house, I presume you have looked at other options and decided they won't work (eg 'under the stairs') ?

Might it work to build a toilet but also something like a Utility room to make the building work better 'value for money' rather than a whole side extension ?

vicryl4 · 30/04/2026 16:46

I have an older house that had no downstairs loo.
Added a porch and extended the garage which enabled us to have a downstairs toilet, basin and shower.
It's so convenient for visitors and potting training my grandson.

i would love to add a shower room but can’t work out where we can put it without blocking all the light to the kitchen. We already have porch. No garage or space for a garage. We can’t put it under the stairs because that’s most of our storage and we’ve have to reconfigure massively to avoid having the WC door in the kitchen (which some people in the street have done, but not for me!)

@user1467978734 @Nourishinghandcream do you have a sketch or a photo?

How many people live in the property? How often do you have guests?

Be way cheaper to get a shed for storage and convert under the stairs than extend.

keepswimming38 · 30/04/2026 17:11

I would just make another area into storage and put it under your stairs. It seems a lot of money and hassle for just that.

Beebumble2 · 30/04/2026 17:39

We had PP for a porch and WC incorporated. ( DH an Architect so was carefully designed). The building costs were astronomically out of proportion with the amenity value.
So we redesigned our under stairs cupboard and put the coats, junk and shoes elsewhere. Much better idea.

Seaside3 · 30/04/2026 18:09

I'd definitely go under the stairs and find alternative storage. I bet if you shared floor plans someone could come up with alternative ideas.

nc909 · Yesterday 21:52

Floor plan attached. I’ve drawn in orange where I think the toilet could go. If we move it to under the stairs the door to the kitchen would need to be moved and it would make the kitchen so much smaller. With almost no worktop space. The boiler is also in the top left corner

I would extend the kitchen and have the cloakroom! It’s all very cramped.

Seaside3 · Yesterday 22:12

Sorry, where are the stairs? And what is the room after the porch? Is it kitchen?

It all seems quite small with lots squeezed in already- if extending i woukd extend to add dining space or more kitchen.

PermanentTemporary · Yesterday 23:15

I think that’s a perfectly ok option myself. I’d probably go for the tiniest possible wet room shower/ toilet as I like that sort of thing, but I think a lot of people would rather have a larger toilet only.

PermanentTemporary · Yesterday 23:23

I like this (I realise you are specifically not going for under stairs, but searching for ‘under stairs shower room’ avoided all the alleged ‘small shower room ideas’ which were usually more like my sitting room size.)
