Will a dining table for here?

My husband is driving me insane, we are buying our first house together and he seems to have it in his head that all furniture must be pushed up against walls and anything in the centre of a room is “a massive thing blocking the way”

So will a rectangle dining table with a long bench and two chairs (bench one side, chairs the other) fit in this space? I don’t have the measurements so we won’t buy anything until we have checked but he is dismissing it out of hand.

They will be removable from the cupboards themselves though (we have integrated and you can definitely remove them!) and could be replaced by freestanding in the alcove.

This is what I would do ^ (and if there's sufficient space, rebuild the cupboard housing the fridge freezer in the alcove so they're not on view).

Imo, it makes far better sense to free up valuable space for a table by moving them and is well worth the hassle involved.

I too agree with moving them and when the fuckers die replace with much better and larger freestanding ones.

This is what you need: NORBERG wall-mounted drop-leaf table, white - IKEA UK

I had no idea that they were removable or at least it hasn’t occurred to me as an option. Mumsnet is a mine of good ideas!

He doesn’t want to use it for anything at all, thinks it should be empty. I do agree it’s narrow though.

The alcove serves no purpose at all, we do love the house but wondering how to make it work is starting to make me worry.

Would be a bit odd to leave it empty! I'd fit a dining table (rectangular) into the area on the plan named dining room/ space so that flows then from the kitchen then in the family area would put in a sofa/s set up to look out onto the garden. With the "lounge" space - you could have that for a kids playroom type area if you have children or home office set up if not (or other).

The alcove is a bit curious but you could get a nice sideboard to go up against the wall there for kitchen ware that you don't use v often etc.

Edit: ideally you'd knock down the part of the kitchen where the hob is to the "lounge" area and reconfigure the kitchen space so you have a "proper" open plan kitchen/ lounge/ dining area. Then it would all flow a bit better - but costly to do this as you'd need steels put in.....
