Can I take my light shades and replace them before moving?

Can I replace my light shades with the paper ones before I move? I don’t want to do this in every room, but there is one which is no longer sold by the shop where I bought it but matches in with my cushions and sofa. It was only about 20quid but I can’t find another to colour match

Of course you can .

minisoksmakehardwork · 24/04/2026 21:23

as long as you leave the actual light fitting, you can take the shade. I’d not bother replacing them with anything personally. We moved into a house that had bare bulbs just bought our own shades. Didn’t occur to do otherwise.

FlatErica · 24/04/2026 21:24

Yes, I would!

Doggymummar · 24/04/2026 21:25

Depends if you included it on the manifest

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 24/04/2026 21:30

I’ve always taken my light shades! They’re bloody expensive!

Of course…light ‘fittings’ need to stay as they will be part of the ‘fixtures and fittings’.

But shades?? Fill your boots (and you needn’t replace with anything else!)

Buscobel · 24/04/2026 21:52

We did take some, but we said that we were.

mondaytosunday · 24/04/2026 22:01

Yes - just fill in the fixture and fittings form saying you are taking them. I plan on taking my wall sconces and my bedroom light shade as it cost about £400! In my last house I took (and replaced with another ) my door knocker as it was a special design from the US. I told them up front. Will take it from my current house too.

LibertyLily · 24/04/2026 22:02

We've always taken some - light fittings, not just shades, often fairly expensive - but either a) removed them before marketing and replaced with something nice but less unique or b) indicated we'd be taking them on the Fixtures & Fittings form (TA10) and replaced with rose, flex and bulb before completion.

Dizzydrizzy · 24/04/2026 22:03

I always do. I wouldn’t want them left either

Credittocress · 24/04/2026 22:30

I didn’t think when I did F&F form, we’ve already exchanged. It is just a shade attached to the basic flex and bulb.

When we moved, we took several of the light fittings and replaced them with pendants.
They were quite expensive (several hundred £ each) but it was declared that they did not form part of the sale so no problem.

I would not even bother replacing the shade but DO leave the bulbs!😆

If your buyers are helpful and prompt about getting the legal work done, I'd buy a replacement shade from Dunelm or similar, rather than leaving bare bulb. If they were awkward, slow and/or inefficient I wouldn't bother. When I sold mine I did replace all the fancy bits I wanted to take with me with basic stuff, so the buyers weren't left without. As long as it's clean and there's loo roll and lights, you're not causing anyone any trauma.

As a buyer I wouldn't expect to be getting the vendors' lightshades tbh.

paint101 · Yesterday 09:11

Of course. It’s unlikely they would even want your lampshades.

Waterwaterwaterwaterwatercycle · Yesterday 09:12

I thought everyone took light shades. No need to replace them either unless something specific in your contract

That’s the thing, I know they wouldn’t, and I don’t want them ending up in the bin.

They have been the buyers from hell though and don’t want to give them reasons to kick off

I'd be the same. I was going to leave a beautiful smeg fridge freezer with my one bed garden flat when I sold it but the guy who bought the place was so difficult, I took it with me and sold it on.

It pays to not be an a-hole in this process.

Ha! We left our Smeg fridge freezer for the buyers of our last house (2024) as a freebie. They were the buyers from hell and as the Smeg was 25 years old/very much prone to misbehaving, we felt they deserved each other 🤣

ButterYellowHair · Yesterday 16:07

You don’t need to replace them. They’re buying the house not the removable decor within. They wouldn’t expect the bed, bath mat or curtains to stay so why the shade.

My seller left all of her curtains and a grand piano in my current property 🙃 I wish she bloody hadn’t
