Best bedroom layout

I’m trying to work out the best layout for this bedroom. It’s for my daughter- she’s 18 and lives at uni for half the year.

The room is 358cm x 249cm.
I’d like to fit the following-
— small double bed with drawers
—small desk
—narrow chest of drawers
—single wardrobe

The room currently has shelves either side of the old chimney breast- I’d like to keep at least one of these if possible.

My two ideas are in the images. I like the one with the bed under the window but is it going to be a problem next to the radiator? Also means only one side of the bed can be accessed- her boyfriend stays over sometimes but not so much that this is really a problem.

Grateful for any ideas.

Option 1 will make the room feel and look smaller.
Option 2 looks sensible

Bed under the window is definitely better. In general rooms feel more comfortable to sleep in the further the bed is from the door.

100% disagree with @TheTreesTheTrees .
It's about the whole room and which way the door opens - which can be changed.

A bed under a window, let alone the radiator, with only one side accessible will feel cramped and not be a restful place to sleep.

Bed head on the wall with the door, wardrobe and chest of drawers on wall at top, desk under window.

Of even wardobe chest of drawers and desk along bottom wall?

Just what I was thinking. I'd be inclined to try and keep storage units together and this would achieve that AND still be able to have the desk at a window.

Option 2 looks a little tight around the end of the bed where the drawers are. Bit of a pain to walk around? How much space will be behind the desk chair?

TallagallaPenguin · 23/04/2026 13:21

Which wall is the door actually on? The 358 wall or the 249 wall? And any option to open the door out the other way to make more space in the room?

Agree - we had a room like this and it was wholly annoying. We rearranged it for our son when he moved in and put the bed up against a wall - it’s no problem having a double bed against a wall when it’s mostly one person.

TallagallaPenguin · 23/04/2026 13:27

You could put the desk under the alcove shelves and so incorporate them as book storage for the desk.

TheyGrewUp · 23/04/2026 13:31

I'd switch the desk and the drawers and buy a 2'6' bed with a pullouy for when the boyfriend stays.

I rent houses to uni students and they all prefer a bed up against a wall to have more floor space. If I put the bed in the middle so it can be accessed on both sides, they move it into a corner - including the ones with partners regularly sleeping over.

I would put the bed in the corner with the head against the door wall facing the shelves (if poss put a tv on the shelves at the foot of the bed). Put the desk next to the bed so it can serve dual duty as a bedside table. Finally buy a wardrobe that has drawers included (ikea pax is idea) and put that on the wall opposite the window.

They all love a decent sized mirror too, so either get a wardrobe with mirrored doors, or mount a large mirror on the chimney breast. Plug sockets near the mirror for hair appliances are also important.

Bonus points for hooks on the back of the door and a massive pinboard above the desk. A wall mounted bedside lamp will free up maximum space on the desk top.

I think that option 2 is better, but turn the drawers by 90 degrees and put it alongside and in-line-with the desk. It will free up that corner.
The bed is better, psychologically speaking, against the chimney breast so you can see who is coming into the room. If it was against the other long wall then the door is too close to the bedhead, which is unsettling (look up the prospect-refuge theory).

Thank you everyone. I’m going to try cutting out my furniture shapes and look at all your suggestions.

@AlannaOfTrebond thanks very much- the Pax wardrobe looks ideal. Is the quality ok?

Pax wardrobes are great - we’ve had them for years.

Pax wardrobes are great.

I have them in my own house as well as a few student rentals and haven't had to replace or repair one yet.
