Would you move from Middleton to Preston for a larger family home

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get your thoughts on something. Would you consider relocating from Middleton (Manchester) to Preston for a bigger home?

We’re currently in a 3-bedroom semi-detached house, but the property in Preston is a 4-bedroom detached. We have three children (aged 13, 11, and 3), so they would all need to move schools.

Would you make the move in this situation? And is Preston a good place to live?

Thanks in advance!

I live outside Preston. Totally depends where you are looking to live. Parts are lovely, village feel. Parts are grim, like everywhere I suppose.
The city centre is pretty empty these days, but it’s fine 🤷🏼‍♀️
i like where I live and for affordability it’s great.

At 13 no I would consider too late to move, as unfair to a teen to uproot their life. I’ve had to wait years to relocate and finally doing it this summer when youngest finishes school. Just my opinion of course, depends how they feel about it and on current living conditions etc. But it is a difficult age to move and think moves of schools should take place before secondary.

Whereabouts in Preston?

olympicsrock · 21/04/2026 05:01

Is the teen settled and thriving ? If so I’d be reluctant to move them away from friends .

Very much depends where in Preston. But yeah I would, but then I live in south ribble and moved from Manchester myself lol

Notmyreality · 21/04/2026 06:29

As people said all depends on the specific area and schools.

It’s Leyland. I am not too bothered about shops as I do most shopping online.

My son is 12, turning 13 next month. Honestly, the kids are more excited about the move than I am. I’m the one feeling conflicted, as I’ve lived in Manchester all my life, so relocating to Preston feels like a big step.

My boys, aged 12 (almost 13) and 11, have always wanted their own rooms. At the moment, we live in a three-bedroom house in Manchester, so they share a room while their 3-year-old sister has the other. They don’t go out much anyway—they mostly chat with their friends on the phone—so socialising isn’t a major concern. They only go out occasionally for friends’ parties, and I can always drive them down when needed.

If they are happy to move then i’d go for it then.

The boys are settled but they are not bothered at all.

Leyland is fine, it’s not Preston, it’s a small town in south ribble.
if your kids are excited then I think it sounds great.

Well I called the council last week and they said most of the good high schools are full and the only one available is just okay. They said they can place the boys on waiting list of my preferred schools. The current high school available is Wellfield High School.
