Anyone built their own media wall?

Billynomatesonhere · 16/04/2026 13:57

I’m desperate to get a media wall in our tv room but completely underestimated the cost to have one made by a carpenter !!

Has anyone built their own? Was it easy? Husband and I are ok at basic DIY, but not sure id this will be too complicated for us! We are wanting some storage as well as an electric fireplace.

any tips / advice would be really appreciated!

Yes we did and I LOVE it. Think ours cost about £2k with materials and electrics. It’s not easy nearly cost us our marriage but you do feel a sense of achievement. I learned how to plaster and saw and got my own tools!

Ikea have lots of modular furniture you could use to create a media wall

We did. Honestly, I hate it now…another fad along with panelling I regret.

It depends on the kind you get. I think the ultra modern ones with boxes and panelling will date really quickly. We did something more traditional (like what you see in American homes) with inbuilt cupboards, oak worktops and wall to wall shelving which is pretty timeless really.

OP might be worth googling Ikea, people will buy Ikea furniture and then do tricks like boxing it in with MDF to give the effect of inbuilt, I’ve seen some really nice ones online.

I wouldn't have one because they're so limiting. Our friends have just bought a house that was all done up to sell and they will be ripping out the media wall as their TV doesn't fit in the tiny TV hole. I think they are an inconvenient fad really like panelling in modern homes.

Like PP, if I was buying a house it would be a real putoff and I would want it removed.

Notyetthere · 17/04/2026 14:20

I did and I absolutely love it. Lots of storage in ours. I built mine using ikea havsta cupboards with billy bookcases to the sides of the tv. I then added 18mm mdf to the top and coving to finish it off.

We also recently built another in another part of the house, again with havsta.

Check out instagram. A few people have shared their hacks on there.

I left a gap big enough for a 65 inch TV. I don't see how we could have a telly bigger than this for the narrow lounge.

The OP doesn’t say anything about moving soon. I design my house for me, not the future buyer in god knows how many years!

What the hell is a media wall?

What the hell is a media wall?

A wall with a tv on it, usually mounted at the wrong height to watch in comfort.

No, because they scream chavvy.

Who knew a thread in property and DIY could be such a bitch magnet.

First time experienced a UK company avoiding to issue a refund by blaming post office for the lost package when the package was actually delivered.

Stay away from www.spacesavingdoors.co.uk

After spending over £2300 on the doors, I would expect fair service if or when something goes wrong with the purchase. I made a mistake with part of the order by selecting the wrong locks, and after numerous emails with no response and three phone calls, I finally managed to get some “help”. I was told over the phone to send the lock back, and I double-checked via text message to confirm whether I was advised to return the items because I didn't want the package to be lost. I paid the highest price at the post office for next-day signed-for delivery, yet a month later I never heard from them. When I followed up, their response was: “This item wasn’t delivered to us by Royal Mail. There is only myself and one other staff member at the premises. I have looked at the detailed tracking info, and neither of us has the signature. I’m afraid you will need to take this up with Royal Mail.” Honestly, I thought only AliExpress would lose packages to avoid issuing refunds, but it turns out a company based in England, selling expensive products, can also 'lose' your package. Needless to say, I saw it coming from the way their after-sales team communicated with me.

😂I know !! Didn’t realize media walls were so controversial.

Pretty sure we won’t be moving so I’ve got no worries about putting off a potential buyer.

thank you to everyone who has suggested ikea, ill take a look.

We have two…I wonder what Mumsnetters think of me.
first one is in the living room and we is the more traditional look, second one is made with kitchen cabinets and could be done DIY. I absolutely love them and they absolutely define and change the room for the better.
