Downstairs toilet with kids

Me and my H have found our dream home but the only thing putting me off is the main bathroom is downstairs, there is an onsuite in the main bedroom. The bathroom is done lovely and will be super handy for DS when playing outside but I worry when he is older about him going downstairs in the dark during the night, obviouslly he could use the on suite but just thinking of when he is around 6/7 years old how he would manage. Anyone had a similar situation.

It’s not great. Have you got a upstairs floor plan?

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 13/04/2026 21:19

Kids generally don’t get up in the night to go to the toilet.

I used to live in a Victorian terrace with a downstairs bathroom. Had two children there, eldest was 11 when we moved out. We didn't think about that aspect when we bought it and it wasn't an issue really as we were all just used to it. The going downstairs bit, I do remember eldest calling for one of us to go downstairs with him around age 7 - he wouldn't go down there alone at night because it was too dark and far away, I guess. But after that age I don't really remember him getting up, that was more me and it was a minor annoyance. I would think it would be better for him to use the en-suite until he's older?

Neither if mine have needed to toilet at night at that age either.

He can use your en-suite if it makes you feel better. My kids sleep on a different floor to us and have done since 5.5 and 3, they are now 10.5 and 13. If you like the house and see yourself long term there, I wouldn’t let it put you off and the price is right 😊

Just tuck a little battery powered, movement triggered little light thing in a corner. One upstairs and one downstairs. It will be all you need.

Usernamenotfound1 · 13/04/2026 22:29

How old is he now and how long do you plan to stay there?

it sounds like he’s very young. Chances are he’ll be fine with the en suite until 11-12 and secondary age when he may want a bit more privacy. By then he’ll be fine going downstairs.

mind my kids are older teens and I still have to kick them out of my en suite into the family bathroom 😂

My granny’s house had a downstairs bathroom. We had a po under the bed 😂😂

Surely he will just use the en suite until he is confident to go down on his own.
We had a downstairs bathroom when our DCs were little. If I left the door open I could see them in the bath from the kitchen - it was actually brilliant.
