Damp patches on attic bedroom ceiling after wind and rain

We live in a house with attic bedrooms so no loft and no access to the tiny space above the bedroom. We've been here 40 years and never had a trace of damp, never had any condensation in any room or on any windows.

After a night of strong wind and heavy rain some damp patches appeared on one bedroom ceiling. Some in a spray pattern and some just patches.
Had a roofer out who said it all looked sound.
It all dried up then another night of wind and rain it came back
We can't get in the space above the ceiling to look.

It could be the wind driving the rain under the roofing, it might be an unusual wind direction. Or the roof is compromised in some way that the roofer can't see. Or overflowing gutters in heavy rain getting in somehow?

If the rain was blowing horizontally, it is possible a small amount of water could get under the tiles of an unlined roof and into the ceiling. We had it once when it snowed but it's rare.

I'd wait for a dry spell, let it dry out, and then see if it recurs. If it does it in exactly the same place on the ceiling, it's much more likely you have a cracked slate or tile that is letting water in, and which needs replacing.

Thanks. The roofer went up, took video and couldn't see any cracked or damaged tiles. No gutters in the vicinity.
The wind was blowing the rain horizontally , it was storm Dave.

It's just that it happened twice in ten days. I'm concerned about water in there doing damage, though realistically it's such a small space if there was a leak there'd likely be more damage.

Blocked or broken gutters?

Coconutter24 · 10/04/2026 14:38

Get a second opinion and see if they say there is no damage

I've had a similar issue with all the storms the past few years. I've had various roofers come out and do this and that but only recently one who actually lifted the tiles to find some were cracked and there were holes in the felt. Get a second opinion - it's getting in somewhere.

Pollpoll · 10/04/2026 16:36

@Tortephant no gutters anywhere near.
Second opinion it is then.

Sideways unusual rain is a thing. I agree @Meadowfinch

We had something like this once, no cracked tiles. Unfortunately needed new felt though and it was quite a big job.
