What colour front doors on a sixties (lots of long white windows) house

I need a new front door and will have a composite one, I have a brochure and looking at doors whenever I’m out and about. Some lovely doors and colours about but I’m not sure my house would look right with the doors I like. I have a typical 60’s house with long white pvc windows. Up and down so it’s a lot of white. The garage door is next to the door (also white, but I could paint) And the other side of the garage is also another side door. So it’s a lot of white in a row! And I need two doors. I love the cottage style plain door with a diamond window and black letterbox rather than silver, and thinking cream. Or griege. I think a brighter colour will look odd. Has anyone got similar and found something nice that works on this style of house to make it look more modern please.

Don’t make it modern. Stick with the character of the building.

I’ve always wanted a purple door but we’re in a historical area and the doors have to be certain colours (brown).

I would stick with white. Cream will look very odd, dirty/yellowy next to white. If you do go for a different colour, (brown might be nice with white) you really need at least two separate things in that colour, or your house will look like one of those old cars with an odd-coloured panel, forever waiting in vain for a respray.

Can you post a pic?
if you don’t want to post your house then something similar from the web?
im struggling to picture what you mean and there are quite a lot of 1960s styles to choose from

i agree you should choose something that matches the original character

Im also trying to find a 1960s door at the moment and have been scouring salvage/ebay

A cottage style door with a diamond window would not go at all with a sixties house. If there's a lot of white then break it up with a colour like black or red and paint your garage door to match.

Yeahyeahyeahnooooo · 06/04/2026 20:23

Pick a colour, green / blue / pink, and paint the garage door to match would be my advice. Cream would look awful in amongst all the white.

If you're having composite I'd suggest something more like Endurance Doors Fuji, in black, dark green or blue but absolutely not with one of those long steel handles which look appalling.

I have just had flush sash double glazing installed, in white. My door is new too and I chose agate grey, with the diamond window, brushed steel fixtures. I live in a bungalow, with white guttering/ soffits, one off built in 1978, so I picked colours to suit the building style and imo it suits. I looked at a huge amount of homes, became fixated with doors, so I gave a lot of consideration to what, happy with my choices. Excuse the photo, just taken and sensor light came on.

We got an endurance door for a 1930s house and I just want to add I got the frame int he same colour (raven black) and it looks amazing. The white frame with a coloured doo looks odd imho. Post a pic of a similar house op!

60's houses in our street and most of us have white doors but our neighbour has a lovely door in sky blue.

Yes, definitely get the frame the same colour as the door, gives it much more of a presence.

I also had the inside part of the door in a colour too, rather than white, as I have no white in my hall at all( woodwork painted same as wall colour or is natural wood).

Whatever the colour, don’t get one with a press down handle on the outside, I think they look awful!

they are quite useful for opening the door though…!

Davros · 07/04/2026 08:14

Traditionally front doors don’t have a handle, they don’t need to be how the door is opened

I agree.

I bought a house with one and when I changed my door that was one of the things I changed. I hated not only the look but the fact that unless I locked it from the inside while in my house anyone could open it from the outside.

I now have a slam lock mechanism which locks automatically every time the door is shut, opens simply with a thumb turn on the inside and the key from the outside. Aesthetically it's so much better as instead of the handle I just have an escutcheon.

Dark blue or green, white frame.

I too live in a 60s house with big white windows. This is my front door

Dark green. Or white.

And definitely not 'cottagey' with diamond windows. And no fake stained glass!

The rectangular / longline windows of Clementines door are a much better chime with a 60s house.

Beebumble2 · 08/04/2026 09:31

Go for red or blue, we lived in a 70s house with a lot of white and our Trafalgar blue door gave it character. Solid Doors are a good make.
