Hi

we have see a house we like
but the garden is north facing. Would we get any sun?
our current garden is smaller but west facing and gets the sun all day. I don’t want a shady garden in the sunshine!

I’ve attached some photos. Thanks!!

If the garden faces fully N then this photo was taken early morning so the sun is coming from E rather than S. In the middle of the day when the sun is from the S you will get more shade than this, at least in the part near the house.

For me the main issue with a N facing garden is the sun never comes into the kitchen. (Assuming kitchen at the back). Will this bother you?

Shade in the actual garden wouldn’t worry me so much, as long as it’s long enough to get sun somewhere, which this one is.

I'd never buy a house with a north facing garden, unless it was very long so there was a lot of sunny garden at the end.

I lived in a North facing house/garden for years and I didn't realise then how depressing it was. When I looked to move, my top priority was a South facing garden. It is bliss. I feel like I'm on holiday. I can put my sun brolly up if it's too hot, no problemo. I can't stress how much better I feel. Getting up in the morning and having your first cuppa in the sun. Don't compromise if you can afford it.

I absolutely love mine, it is fairly long. I’m a keen gardener and burn in the sun so is perfect for me. There’s a large patio by the house and one further down the garden. There isn’t anything I haven’t been able to grow, I’ve got raised beds for veg, tiny orchard, woodland, pond and wildlife areas, 2 cottage style beds, one with a bit I’m going to turn into a gravel garden and a greenhouse. Next on the list is a summer house.

The only slight struggle I gave had is establishing roses but that is as the soil is sandy and not to do with sun as they are in sun pretty much all the day where they are.

South facing wouldn’t be for me, especially with the warmer summers as would have to plant heavily to create shade which would be expensive for large trees or take ages but we are all different and you have to decide what works for you.

I have a north (slightly west) facing garden. It’s long but not dissimilar to the pics you’ve posted and there’s always sun. We have a decking area close to the house and it’s sunny until around 9pm in peak summer. Sat out there last night until 6pm. I have raised beds down the left side of the garden and they are sunny in the mornings and shaded in the afternoon. I love that the front of the house is always sunny

Unless you have a short garden and a 3 storey house, the majority of the garden will get sun in summer, and a decent amount in the other seasons. Since it's single storey, unless you want to literally sit by your back extension wall it probably won't be an issue for that house.
Our garden is exactly north facing and even in the middle of winter there's sun on the last third of the garden.
In fact there's a house (side facing) right at the bottom of the garden, so even if it was South facing it would have almost the same shading.
I think you have to look at the relationship between the house and garden in more detail to decide.
