Withdrawing from a house purchase after offer accepted in a chain

Ok I guess I will be hammered by mumsnetters for thinking of pulling out. A few weeks ago, found a house as we have sold (under offer) and put in offer, accepted all fine. Now DH is having lots of second thoughts and saying he really doesn’t want to proceed with the purchase but look for something else. I’m at my wits end as we are in a chain and I don’t want to upset anyone especially the vendors by pulling out. Should I just go with looking for something else and withdrawing from purchase - I’m not that in live with the house to be honest but felt under pressure to find something quickly

A house purchase is a massive thing to go through with, just because you don't want to upset a bunch of strangers. I think you need to stop being a people pleaser.

SUUUUUUNNNNN · 03/04/2026 19:09

I think you need to do what you need to do but as somebody currently in a chain stop dicking around and don't put another offer on a house you are only half arsed about it really is unfair to the other people.

HettySunshine · 03/04/2026 19:11

It sounds a bit brutal, but you don’t owe the vendors anything. You and your DH are going to have to live in the property you buy for several years. You both need to be happy with it.

I think you are being unfair on the OP. Buying a house when you are under pressure to find something is very difficult. I sympathise with the OP and think she should pull out unless they 100% need to move.

Chatsbots · 03/04/2026 19:17

If you definitely want to move, sell your house and find a rental until you find a house you love.

If you aren't even sure you want to move and definitely don't want the new house, pull out now before it goes any further.

Whatever you do, don't wait until the last minute to do it.

Fibrous · 03/04/2026 19:17

If you were my buyers (maybe you are?), then pull out quickly so I have time to find another buyer before my mortgage offer runs out as they are going up and up!

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 03/04/2026 19:19

You can’t buy a house just to be polite. The only thing you can do now is be honest immediately

Villanousvillans · 03/04/2026 19:19

Pull out if you’re not happy. Don’t worry, people do it all the time. It’s a massive amount of money to spend, so it has to be right.

JohnBullshit · 03/04/2026 19:21

Yes, you need to jump quickly in one direction or another.
It's really not that unusual for would-be buyers to change their minds early on in the process. It's a real hassle if you let it drag on first.

Seahorsemama · 03/04/2026 19:47

Thank you all for the advice, definitely want to keep our buyers and will not be letting them down. We are happy to also go into rented for a spell whilst we look.

we are only at initial stages but something g came up on that and has kinda put us off.
thanks all again

No one should buy a house without being at least 80 percent sure they want to go ahead. You can pull out. It happens all the time. The sooner you do it, the easier and cheaper for everyone involved.

Wot23 · 03/04/2026 22:31

buying is a joint decision, if DH does not want it they why are you still thinking of buying it, particularly as you say you are not in love with it yourself anyway.

what is the rush to buy ?

Itsgoingtobeagloriousday · 03/04/2026 22:47

Don’t buy a house you’re not certain about but don’t hold up your sale either. Going into rented is a good option plus you will be in a very strong position as a no chan buyer once you do find the right place.

Getamoveon2024 · 03/04/2026 22:54

No, of course don’t buy a house you aren’t sure of. But the question needs to be asked….why would you make an offer if you weren’t sure? Having been through the whole shit show of selling houses in the last two years, I can’t tell you how much it’s put me off….people in general! And no, I wouldn’t offer on a house I wasn’t sure of or that I couldn’t afford. If something has come up on the survey, fair enough, but op doesn’t say that?

The new renters rights act is a blessing for this kind of situation - when you want to keep your sale but take your time with the buying afterward. If I understand it correctly there is nothing now to prevent you from taking a rental and giving 2 months notice as soon as you find a suitable property. Well I say now but its from the end of this month.

correct, transforms the position of house buying
utter nightmare for landlords who fail to vet the real position of those enquiring to rent

dicentra365 · 05/04/2026 08:44

No hammering here - you can’t go ahead with spending hundreds of thousands to keep a bunch of strangers happy. The only thing i would say is pull out immediately if you are going to - the longer it goes on the more money people spend on solicitors, surveys etc.

HouseHouseHouse7 · 05/04/2026 08:47

Call the estate agent first thing tomorrow OP.

Re the renters rights act - bear in mind it only applies in England - you don’t say where you are but it’s irrelevant in Scotland, Wales, NI.
