Vanity unit against side wall - counter top sink?

Redesigning our very small family bathroom, it's the only bathroom in the house. Space issues mean the sink and vanity unit have to be hard up against the side wall.
I am struggling to find a vanity unit and sink combo that will fit nicely hard up against a side wall - most sinks overhang the top of the vanity ever so slightly, meaning there will be a gap between lower unit and wall.

I was thinking a counter top sink might solve this problem as vanity unit can be hard against wall and sink positioned anywhere. But is this a bad idea with messy and wet children getting water outside the sink and getting everything wet?
Do counter top sinks really only work in a sensible adults only environment?

Any other bright ideas?

Thanks

Being the only wash basin in house you need to cater for all uses.
Will People use it for shaving ?
Do you have contact lens wearers?
is there space elsewhere to put on make up?
Do you have many separate electric toothbrushes?
Do you have other storage in the form of a mirrored cabinet?
I currently am trying to fathom how to replace two 400mm basins with no overflow and feeble wall hung storage in main bathroom and en-suite..
Download the catalogues for Duravit, Roca and Ideal Standard and study them. These have the best multiple suggestions for all your options. I’m considering for our main bathroom a narrow but deep cloakroom basin with a tap positioned to the side and a mirrored bathroom cabinet above. Thinking floor standing rather than wall hung but wall hung does give illusion of space.

Sorry- I don’t understand what you mean. Do you mean it will be in a corner, so walls to two sides? Otherwise aren’t all vanities up against the wall?

Re-reading my post, I don’t think I actually answered your question—oops!
If you place the vanity unit against two walls, wouldn’t you just seal the edges where it meets the walls? You’d only be looking at around 3–5 mm of sealant, which isn’t really any different from a standard washbasin. I’d just make sure to choose a design with a minimal lip and a reasonably deep basin to reduce the chance of splashes.
In my experience, children grow out of those little IKEA step stools very quickly, so it’s worth planning the space with slightly older kids in mind rather than just toddlers.
That said, choosing the right compact unit is key. City Plumbing has an in-house range (made by Roca), and when we visited recently, our branch had a good selection—at least 10 small vanity units and sinks on display.
It might even be worth taking a portable step and your kids along to try things out in person. But I'd still download the catalogues for Duravit and Ideal Standard as they have decent ranges. Making sure you have lots of storage to keep the top of the sink clear will also minimise the risk of water splashed everywhere.

I have a countertop unit and I wouldn't say that they're inherently messier, although it's an adult bathroom in fairness. I think as long as you have a waterproof countertop then it shouldn't be a problem from that point of view.

Having said that, I'm not sure that you will be able to put a vanity right in the corner because you'll struggle to open any doors or drawers.

We are in a similar situation with a small bathroom and have gone for a wall-hung basin with a cupboard above. And then by being quite creative, we've managed to find space for a wall hung cupboard for additional storage.

We have this one, comes in about five widths - is that the kind of thing you’re thinking of??

Sorry - yes that's exactly what I mean. In a corner so against two walls.

I've discovered this YouTube video where he does pretty much what we want to do - and clearly there is a 5mm ish gap between the side of the unit and the side wall. Maybe it's not so much of a problem, and actually is probably essential to allow the doors to open properly.

We have this one it’s up against the wall tight I’m pretty sure, it’s in the main bathroom which I don’t use so I can’t remember exactly but I don’t think there’s a gap. The cupboards open easily as they are framed

Thanks - that looks lovely and is clearly designed to go into a corner. I will try to find something similar that is a little more in my price range!

Thank you! Yes this is clearly the style that will work in a corner. Unfortunately 900mm to too big for our tiny bathroom, so will need to look for something around 600mm wide. And ideally something with drawers!

Would this be any good?

IKEA sink

You can buy the sink and unit separately and it comes in a variety of sizes.

Thanks, that does look good. The sink definitely overhangs at the side so if it is hard up in the corner there will be a small gap down the side of the unit. I guess it's just working out different overhangs meaning different gaps...

I’ve just measured mine and the overhang is about 10 or 11mm. I’d probably put a piece of board or battens that thick up against the wall and paint or cover the bit that shows at the front. Maybe a tiling edge trim would work?
