Clocks going forward- black out curtains!

First time mum and my 8 month old has just had a MELTDOWN at bedtime because I put her to bed and it’s daylight outside. She only has flimsy gold curtains!
When I stay in hotels the curtains often have like a plastic backing that blocks the light, does anyone know what these are called or where to get??
we have regular “blackout” curtains in our room and they are useless tbh

We just hot these from might like this at John Lewis: www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-textured-weave-pair-blackout-lined-pencil-pleat-curtains/p5130353?s_share=jlappdroid John lewis
They're lightweight too and make the room.very dark.

I got fed up of trying blackout curtains and blinds and always a chink of light getting through. So I got some Velcro and blackout material from Amazon. Ran one side of velcro on the frame and the other on the blackout material. Properly blacked out room

If you don't want to get totally new curtains the Tommee tippee blackout blind is great, you can just stick it to the window behind the curtain (and then you've got it to take on holiday too).

IKEA do some magnetic ones which are epic

TBH I can't understand why the "blackout" curtains you have tried are not working.

All our curtains & blinds are Dunelm M2M and do what they say on the tin. The only light that comes in is bleed through from around the edges and to prevent this our curtains are doubled up with shutter blinds which really does make the room dark.

Admittedly this is a pricy (if aesthetically pleasing) solution so maybe a close-fitting blackout blind would work better for you (the sort where the edge of the blind is in rails preventing bleed through).

it Might be worth trying to get her to sleep not in perfect darkness with blackout blinds. Easier long term.

MigGirl · 30/03/2026 09:08

I can certainly recommend the Dunlm blackout blinds and curtains. They work well, we also in some of our rooms have fitted blackout blinds which run in rail's they work extremely well but are more pricy.

DD has curtains from John Lewis, I got blackout curtain lining from there as well and they work really well together. She can’t fall asleep if it’s light, she is very sensitive to light. A bit of light comes at the edges but they are light coloured, thin and short, with darker coloured/ thicker material it will be different.

If you are looking for a cheaper solution, IKEA do a blackout lining (Glansnäva) that works well. The Tomee Tippee blackout blind works well.

Yeah, to be honest.

A tip if you've got ligh creeping in through the edges of curtains is to get some thumb tacks and pin the curtains to the wall on their very edges down the sides. 3 or 4 each side should do and if you're clever with it you can turn the curtain edge in on itself to do it and do it from inside the curtain (stand inside the curtain) and the pins will be invisible.

Does that make any sense?!? 🤣

Thankyou all for the suggestions!! 🩷

It's not always about the actual curtain material, it's about how well they fit to the window and light coming through the edges.

We have a blackout blind which is closely fitted to the window, AND blackout curtains, it works pretty well. It's not completely pitch black but it's dark enough, and I don't want baby to only be able to sleep in complete darkness.
