Weird smoke alarm

Does anyone please know what type of smoke alarm this is? It isn’t working and I can’t figure out how to open it to replace the battery or whether it even has a battery. My DH wants to leave it alone and put a new smoke alarm next to it but I think that would look terrible.

Those look like the ones wired in. Contact your local fire brigade they will check it for you.

Yes that is a proper system rather than standalone detectors, perhaps it was necessary for building regulations.
When you say it's not working do you mean you had a fire and nothing alerted you?
There should be a main panel somewhere, perhaps near the meters or by the front door.
Are you in a flat or house? Did it used to be a commercial building/is there a shop below? Any other relevant history of the building?
I agree that the fire brigade have knowledge and willingness regarding fire detection, so they are worth a try.

it looks more like a heat sensor than a smoke alarm. Usually found in kitchens, so you don’t set them off with burnt toast. They are usually interlinked to smoke detector alarms in other rooms.

The house was rented out before I bought it so it may have needed a wired in system for that. I pressed the button on it and it didn’t make a noise so I assume it’s not working.

I would just get an electrician that can deal with it rather than the fire brigade.

If it was rented they should have been interlinked and ideally hardwired.

So pressing a button on any should set them all off. But they do usually have back up batteries and need replacing every 10 years, & covering up with little shower caps when any decorating is done as they don’t like to get dust from sanding down in them.

As a previous poster said, electricians usually deal with these, rather than the firebrigade.
