Sanded floorboards instead of carpet - noise?

Twoshoesnewshoes · 22/03/2026 17:14

We’re in the process of removing carpet and sanding back floorboards in an upstairs bedroom.
we live in a semi detached and the room is against the party wall.
my friend says that without the carpet we will hear more noise from neighbours, and them from us.
Will we/they?

You’re worried?? Imagine how your poor neighbours will feel.

You’re basically removing much of the sound insulation so yes, it will be noisier for you and your neighbours. It could be significantly worse for your neighbours.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 22/03/2026 22:03

Yes that’s true
oof

Yep. Floorboards upstairs are horribly noisy.

Anewerforest · 22/03/2026 22:06

Loads of noise. Our next door neighbours have just done it, we never heard them when the had carpets but now we her them all day walking, talking, playing games etc. fortunately they are fairly quiet people or it would be horrible.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 22/03/2026 22:23

Okay.
this is actually a very clumsy reverse
our next door neighbours have done this, today.
shit.

@Anewerforest was it upstairs?
we are very quiet and they say they never hear us. We had our alcoves insulated when we moved in. We don’t really hear them, but im worried now!

We have done ours and I haven't noticed a difference.
For some reason people are really against it, one friend said it would be unbearable cold and draughty. Its honestly been fine. My OH is noise sensitive and we live in an old house with thin walls. It probably wont make much difference.

No, next door in a solid Victorian house. We even hear their water pipes when they use their shower. Astonishing what a difference carpets made. ☹️
Oh do you mean was their sanding upstairs? It was several rooms on each floor.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 23/03/2026 12:43

Yes upstairs in one bedroom

If you put in wood floors you can put sound deadening cushioning underlay if you just tidy up the floorboards it will be noisy and probably very draughty unless they are very tight.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 23/03/2026 12:47

Very noisy, cold and draughty too.

FeyreArcheron · 23/03/2026 12:47

noisy and cold

TheLambtonWorm · 23/03/2026 12:51

We have sanded floorboards in living room and fwiw our neighbours say they never hear us and our 4 year old isn't quiet. They might just be saying that though because we definitely hear them and their kids 🤣

hellofrommyothername · 23/03/2026 14:55

Ask them to consider getting a rug at least! I would if my neighbours asked.
