Please share your recommendations for lovely (both picturesque and community minded) villages in Oxfordshire from where Year 7 DC can safely take a bus to school in Summertown in Oxford.

We have a healthy budget (for very sad reasons) and would like at least four bedrooms and ideally a period house with a large garden.

To be honest all roads into Oxford are a bit of a nightmare commute.

If your move is for the prep school I’m thinking of, why not just live in North Oxford for the duration and then reconsider once they’re at senior school?

Exactly this.

Woodstock, Boars Hill, north Oxford itself

NeelyOHara · 22/03/2026 17:21

Wolvecote?

KillTheTurkey · 22/03/2026 17:24

Woodstock, Tackley, Kirtlington, Thrupp, Cassington, Eynsham.

The traffic in summertown since the congestion zones is horrific.

Picturesque and easy commute into Summertown?????

So many villages look ok on paper but TBH they are not really pretty pretty until you get a bit further out and then you increase the travelling problems.
I concur about looking at North Oxford itself.

Woodstock & Kirtlington are reasonable but it is the commute that is an issue. Eynsham is not very pretty and the commute awful (should be better when the famous P&R is finally in operation). Yarnton is just not pretty.
Add to the list Tackley, Bladon, Long Hanborough & Combe which are MUCH nicer but further out.
Islip is pretty but a real rat run and best avoided. Charlton On Otmoor is nice as are Merton & Murcott but again, it is the travelling.

Driving into North Oxford (or anywhere around Oxford for that) is a nightmare so is public transport or a school minibus an option?

Thank you for all the responses so far - really appreciate the input, and it helps to have a starting point as until now I have just had a map!

I did think about North Oxford, but currently we live in a very urban area in London and the countryside has always been where we are all happiest, so I was hoping for a fresh start in a rural location.

I suggest villages up to Oxon/Northants border (as the Oxford private bus service runs through to them. So Deddington, Adderbury, Clifton, Aynho, Souldern as the distant ones and then check out the route for others nearer to Oxford.
All named are lovely villages, but DC would have a reasonably long time on bus, though most see this as social time.

OneBusyFinch · 23/03/2026 14:27

thirding Woodstock - lovely lovely place with excellent bus routes

FloralSpray · 23/03/2026 14:36

Look at the routes for the S4, S7 or S5. They don't go into the Park and Ride at Parkway Station.
Wherever you chose as nice now will soon change. Oxford is demanding they build houses over everywhere soon.

Justmadesourkraut · 23/03/2026 14:51

Wokvercote or Jerico in North Oxford give you direct access to Port Meadow, so very rural feeling, but you can walk or cycle to Summertown and don't have to queue in on the main roads. There is a regular bus from Wokvercote as backup.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 23/03/2026 21:26

If you have a good budget, buy somewhere in Jericho near the canal and port meadow (I’d love one of those houses that back on to the canal ❤️). Once DC is a teen they can go out independently in the city.

PoloPol · 23/03/2026 22:36

Jericho seems to be for lottery winners only. I’m staggered at the price per square foot!

Would you consider Wolvercote (my absolute dream location)? It's on the edge of Port Meadow for walks galore, plus on the canal path which you can use to cycle out of Oxford or into the City. Your kids might be able to cycle along it to their school. There is also a bus route that serves Wolvercote.

Not to mention the Abbey ruins, the lovely pubs, swimming in the river at summer... oh how I miss it!
