Architect for loft conversion tips please

Looking to get our loft done and our preferred builder has said he can do it if we get detailed drawings done. I’ve never commissioned an architect before- would they do this or is it too small a job? I can see some fixed fee online only options, is this a false economy? Any experience welcomed!

We had two come out one said it wasn’t doable due to pitch of our roof second one said no problem!

Did all the drawings and steel calculations for a fixed fee!

How much was the fee? Our neighbours have one so hopefully should be possible!

Think it was £2466 or something random but that was for our loft and an extension!

Most of the ones we called offered to come round for a free consultation!

I had a similar experience with the free consultation and quote. I paid £1800 for architectural drawings for my side return and loft (in London) x

I’ve just picked up this thread

Ensure your Architect is an actual qualified Architect
Many prople call themselves Architects but aren’t. Which is illegal and the title is protected in law

You can check their name and practice by going on the Architects registration board ( ARB ) online,
Go to check architects registration and put their name in
If they are qualified they must be registered with the ARB
If they aren’t on it they aren’t registered and aren’t an Architect

Architects carry PI insurance, which is your safeguard, and must keep up with all regs etc through yearly CPDs.
