Sash window restoration

Has anyone had theirs restored and would you recommend it? Im expecting it to be fairly pricey considering the skill involved.

Mine will open from the bottom ,but pretty much painted over from the top. They still have their ropes and weights but some wood is rotting and we think this may need a specialist.

Have you done your own? Was it worth the hassle?

Victorian cottage with original windows.

Thank you!

Yes. You should do this. Find heritage sash restorers and get a few quotes. Some paint too others don’t so compare like for like. Totally worth doing.is it Listed?

We found a local joiner to make us some new sashes. Worked out cheaper than restoring - but many of our ropes had come apart and the weights had dropped.

Thank you both. It's not listed, but I still want proper wooden sashes, new or restored. Ill get a few quotes. Thanks again.

Are you anywhere near London? We had ours done by Elliott Laidler. He was excellent.(but didn't paint)

My DD has had her sash windows restored and had double glazing inserted. she has a Victorian townhouse in Leeds. It was expensive but worth it. She hasn't done them all at once but the company have been fine with that. She only has one left to do.

Restoring is always better as it’s cheaper and also the wood is so much better quality from then that what it would be replaced with. You can get the windiest draft stripped too, which will help with their energy efficiency.

If you are in North Yorkshire it's the sort of job my cousins do.

Thanks all. We have been recommended a local company. Expensive, but I think will be well worth it.
