How to stop a rug bunching up on carpet and tripping us?

The carpet in our living room has a rather bad stain on it from previous owners. I've had it professionally cleaned which has improved it, but it's still there & looks horrible. I don't want to replace it just yet as recently had a new kitchen & having other parts of the house renovated before we get around to the living room.

So, I've bought a cheapish rug to put over that area. It's been down for about 6 months, but still has lumps & bumps in it that I can't get rid of & are a trip hazard.

I've been looking at carpet tape, but they all say that they're not suitable for a rug on carpet. I've tried carpet tacks, but, because of the thickness of the carpet underneath, they weren't long enough to go into the floor boards & came loose.

Can someone advise me on what to do about it, or should I cut my loses, get rid of the rug & put up with the stain on the carpet for the next year or so until we get around to decorating the living room & replacing it?

I have a similar problem but with a rug that I will be keeping.

You can get an underlay mat type thing from Dunelm and similar places, but I don’t know if they actually work as I think they are more aimed at rugs on hard floors.

Would love the MN hive mind to make some real life recommendations!

The rug grip stuff from ikea is pretty good with the thin cheap rugs but it still rucks. I’ve generally found you need good quality heavy rugs to work with carpet, so something that forms a solid roll and goes down with a thwap when you unroll it, then they stay put under their own weight.

Sew it to the carpet?

Or sew Velcro strips onto both

The rug grip underlay from Amazon was an absolute game changer for us. The rug hasn’t moved since!

We got some double sided tape from Screwfix and it works very well.

This was what we bought if you pop into Amazon search bar- has been great. I think they cut it to measure “FrithRugs Foxi Anti Slip, Anti Creep Rug Underlay. For Carpeted Floors”

Foxi is brilliant for rugs on carpets. Bought it a few weeks ago, perfect

Had a look at the foxi stuff - it’s not cheap is it! Nearly £90 for the size I need.

Fasterthan40 · 22/03/2026 12:26

Not cheap but we haven’t had to even think about our rug since we bought it a few years ago
