I am surrounded by chaos. Please tell me your best packing and moving tips. It feels never ending.

Start earlier than you think, it will take longer than you expect.

Be ruthless about throwing stuff out/sending things to the charity shop.

Label all boxes and what room it needs putting in new house.

Pack on overnight suitcase with essentials, and order a takeaway in on your first night in your new place.

Good luck!!

Pack for the new house, and the life you want to lead there, not for the old house.

If you have dc, roll up their bedding, pop it in a bin bag and unroll it on their new beds. They will sleep more easily if their new beds smell like their old beds.

ProudFriend · 15/03/2026 09:44

Pay to be packed if you can possibly afford it. It is surprisingly less expensive than you would imagine and the stress it avoids is priceless. At least get a quote and see what you think.

AndSoFinally · 15/03/2026 10:56

Get a packing service. Best money ever spent

Chemenger · 15/03/2026 11:00

Ruthlessly dispose of anything not worth packing then pay for the removers’ packing service.

EasternStandard · 15/03/2026 11:14

Pay the movers to do the packing too if you can. Incredibly efficient.

Thehorticuluralhussie · 15/03/2026 11:19

Put a big label on the door to every room that the movers can match with the labelled boxes.

Lovemybunnies · 15/03/2026 11:20

Get yourself a tape gun. Consider paying extra for the movers to dismantle furniture and put it together again if you are self pack.

When we moved I asked for quotes for removals and removals+packing. The difference was £500 and was money very well spent!

Papricat · 15/03/2026 13:41

Xanax.

BruceAndNosh · 16/03/2026 03:53

Stick a label on each door ie Emma's Room, office etc.
Draw rough plan on where you want removal people to put furniture. Otherwise you have to get them to move the bed because you want the wardrobe there or else you are constantly darting from room to room to answer "where do you want this missus?"
Pay for packing service. Sell whatever it takes to pay for it. Seriously.

Truetoself · 16/03/2026 05:47

Best tip is to get movers to do it for you

WhaleEye · 16/03/2026 05:50

Pay for removal men to pack.
It’s cheaper than you think and they will pack the whole house in a day including clothes.
Anything broken is covered by their insurance too.

EmbarrassmentLovesCompany · 16/03/2026 06:55

Where are you in the process?

As soon as you know you want to move, start getting rid of stuff. Sell it, give ut away, charity shop, recycle or bin. Keep going with reducing the amount of stuff.

Then pay the removal guys to pack for you.

This.

Declutter like mad before they arrive to do the packing though or you are literally paying people to move your clutter from one house to another house.

Get a skip, declutter fiercely, let the movers pack up your stuff as well as move it.

NebulousSadTimes · 16/03/2026 11:04

AllJoyAndNoFun · 16/03/2026 11:11

Cushions are great for filling the tops of boxes and stopping the other stuff moving round.

Womaninhouse17 · 16/03/2026 11:13

Be really honest with yourself about what you should keep. Throw/give away as much as you can. It's too easy to just pack it all, telling yourself you'll sort it at the other end - you won't!

Best idea is to pay for a full pack

failing that buy the boxes and packing paper from your mover, you then get uniform sized boxes that stack properly and make life so much easier!

isthatmytrainleaving · 16/03/2026 16:58

Pay for a packing service if you can, everyone seems to recommend it. If not then large coloured stickers for the packing boxes, write a number on the sticker, do box 1 etc. Each room has its own colour. Far easier to put a coloured sticker on the door frame at the new house so the removal company know which room it goes in.

I also put a sticker on each side so no matter which way round it was put in a room I could see it unlike when it is written on top of the box which may have another boxed stacked on top.

I wrote on each box where it had come from too so "lounge cupboard" because that meant if I was looking for something I knew where to find it in the old house. I also kept a notebook with all the box contents. I should add I packed the house up as Dh had already had to start his new job in the new city.

Notmyreality · 16/03/2026 17:23

Get someone else to do it

RosesAndHellebores · 16/03/2026 17:27

Apart from paying someone else, put clean bed linen on all beds the day before. The duvet, pillows and sheet for each bed goes in a box on the bed. Minimoses making up on moving day.
