Talk to me about LVT - Amtico, Karndean, Invictus

Or any others in fact

Advantages/disadvantages?

What does it offer over engineered real wood? Particularly around mopping the floors, does wood cope with this?

Or in fact just getting the floorboards done nicely?

We’ve got both Karndean and Amtico but I’d avoid wood effect again as it’s a bitch to clean if you’ve got a fake grain and wears socks out fast (although that might just be me!). As a whole I love them and they are very hard wearing.

We have Karndean throughout the whole downstairs. It’s been down 12 years and still looks the same as when it was laid and we have 3 kids a dog and a cat.

We also had a flood in the downstairs toilet and it was unaffected

We have Karndean in most of our rooms and really rate it. We have dogs and it's good as new after three years, very easy care and nice to walk on.

Very unimpressed with the karndean we have in our kitchen, installed around 2 years ago now. Lots of visible surface scratches and a couple of deep scratches where we dropped a bowl. It wasn’t exactly cheap and I wouldn’t get it again.
we have a dog, a cat and kids. Scratches are all over the place and couldn’t tell you what has caused them. I hate it.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 14/03/2026 20:16

We have amtico (the top end stuff as it was predictably the one I liked best) I think its called signature.

We did not do it all throughout the entire downstairs.
I bitterly regret it. Bitterly.
Cannot emphasise it enough.

LOVE the amtico. Zero maintainance. Very very few marks despite pets and heavy toy abuse.

IndieRocknRoll · 14/03/2026 20:25

We have Karndean Art Select which is towards their top end in our hall & lounge Really happy with it. Easy to maintain and still looks great after 5 years.

I’ve got engineered wood and original Victorian parquet downstairs and original floorboards upstairs. Hate LVT and its ilk. Always looks artificial. They mop fine.

OH wants engirneered wood.

Possibly he means in terms of levelling the floors if they are slightly different heights which is better to do all at once as it’s self levelling I think.

Yes sorry thats what I mean

And for those that have floor boards, whats the advantages in just getting your floorboards done, our floor boards upstairs are all different heights, a bit scrappy, lots of paint and stains all over them, is it a lot of work to get someone just to sort them out and have floor boards. I love floorboards.

We're being told we have to do all the rooms at once if we want it flowing through, is that right? Due to the screeding

Its going to be a nightmare furniture wise though

Yes, if the floor has to be screeded it’s fine all in one go. I was lucky as I had a load of work done on the house - walls knocked down etc and then when it was time for the floor I went on holiday for a week. When I got home I had 72sqm of perfect Karndean all through the whole of downstairs. I cried, it was so beautiful. There are some chips in it now though so it’s not as hard wearing as my mum & dads Amtico floor that was laid in the 70s and was still good as new when the house was sold in 2017.

littlebilliie · 14/03/2026 21:34

we had karndean Initially it came with the 25 year guarantee it did start to break up around year 10 and it also started to fade. We’ve used a different product on our new kitchen which is designed for restaurants and bars and I would highly recommend doing some research on that because they are meant to last forever I’m also really careful about what products I use to clean it and I use a lightly damp mop with grated soap and this seems to work really well and doesn’t rob the floor of its colour which some of these cleaners do

I meant more we're being told the screeding has to be done all at once across one floor, which means all our top floor furniture etc has to go somewhere, we would rather not do this and do it room by room but they said they couldnt (only spoke to one place so far)

I want it flowing through with no thresholds

Oh dear, what sort of pets as we have cats?

I’ve got four dogs and had karndean summer oak down for nearly twenty years there’s a few barks but it is still beautiful and warm and glows in sunlight - wooden floors would mark more in my opinion
