@Davros that is beautiful and classic and perfectly in keeping with what I assume is a Victorian home!

Davros · 07/03/2026 23:21

Thanks for your kind words. It is a Victorian house. DD (22) and I both like traditional and interesting

We've just renovated a derelict property and had multiple bathrooms/en-suites to do. I'm FAR from any expert, designer or colour expert! We aren't fully finished but things I'd do/recommend (not at home this weekend so can't take pics right now):

-Wall paint is cheaper to change than tiles if you don't like the colours or need a change in a few years
-Free standing baths can be a PITA to clean and have no where to put the shampoo/soap etc. Great for magazine pics but that's about all!
-We went to several high bathrooms and tile shops. We ended up using an independent one nearly. They came out a measured, let us take tiles home to see against different light and were so helpful in advising on things we'd never considered.
-They recommended a brilliant tiler. He said that many cheaper tiles from say topps tiles, B&Q etc are not only not square, but also not flat. Plus the breakage rate is more apparently.
-Large tiles make the room appear larger, less grout and easier to clean
-We got comfort height seats in all bathrooms which I love. They look like a normal seat but those few cm's make all the difference to my knees. I'm only ing my 40's but sitting on a lower, 'normal' seat now feels almost like squatting. You can get a squatting potty if need to raise your feet or have kids
-Get cabinets with drawers like the pic posted up thread. We only had these in 1 en-suite and really regret it!

Thank you so much, all of that is really helpful advice

We have just done this (not quite finished). No grey, no panels

That looks really good quality and well fitted. You must be really pleased with it

@AllJoyAndNoFun Small family bathroom so shower over bath situation or just shower

We just had the bath ripped out and replaced with a full length shower in the space, much better. The bath was not getting used and we all hated having to step out of the shower that high up.

I shower once or twice day and only take a bath about once a month at most, but I still worry I would miss a bath

A family home needs a bath.

Where else do sick covered duvets go until morning?

Davros · 08/03/2026 08:49

@Itsokaytomorrowisanewday thank you, I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but we are very happy with it. We can’t find a vintage or plain looking cabinet so we are going to have a glass shelf and plain mirror.

Mine completed August 25. I love it.

More photos.
Bought all items from Plumbworld. Very pleased with the quality. Tiles were from Clay and Rock and the towel rail from Drench.

I second the comfort height. Great for cleaning. Large tiles too and also if tiling the floor they need to be porcelain and 10mm thickness. We bought rectified tiles( straight edges) so that we didn’t need trim.
If you want a recess for shampoo etc think about the shower as we didn’t think about the bar so couldn’t have one but I love the corner shelves from Hansgrogh. We also had a grab rail put in( we are early 70’s) don’t need it but future proofing. It’s great for hanging the bath mat on. 😀

We were lucky our bathroom had enough space for both walk in shower and bath, but if it hadn’t I’d not have hesitated to do the same. It is much better just walking into the shower than climbing over a bath. We also got a low profile base, so it is not even a step up, just a couple of centimetres off the floor.

we did put a bath back in, it’s a lovely claw foot roll top one, as my husband and daughter felt a family home should have one, but the reality is it is an expensive ornament, none of us have baths, and any new owner could have put it back in.

I already posted up thread, but along with the comfort height toilet, we got rimless ones which make cleaning very easy. Ours are also off the floor. Again, easier to clean the floor and make the room appear larger.

IF space is short within the bathroom, you can either have a pocket door, or just turn the door to open outwards into the hall. We did this and it saves 1m2 of floor space within the room.

Rimless is brilliant. Whole tiled room is so much easier I use Flash speed op and do walls and floor- it’s a game changer. Being using it this way for a good few years.

This was what we did with ours at our last house (before we hung the jib door).

I loved it and can't wait to get on with replacing the hideous 1960s mess we inherited here with something similar!

Our starting point this time is a London Basin Co oriental style basin with galleons and crazy colours 😍

something I can’t stand is those hanging toilets, so ugly. Sorry, each to their own

seenabeena · 08/03/2026 19:19

Tiled it myself & I have Parkinson’s 🙂

We changed our en-suite to a walk in shower as we didn’t use the huge oversized bath! We have a bath in another room so losing it didn’t matter. There is a Facebook group that will probably be helpful to you bathroom renovations and ideas - can’t link for some reason - as loads of real bathrooms on there.

Davros · 08/03/2026 20:40

@seenabeena wow, that is impressive tiling. I’ve taken a screenshot of yours as I want to do the same, replace bath with shower, but I’ve got a sloping roof

7catsforthewin · 08/03/2026 20:59

I did statement tiles on one wall and then a nook built in across the bath with it. The rest a cheaper neutral stone colour large tile. I think with my small bathroom the hexagonal would have been too much all over but by having it as a feature and in small parts of other walls it has worked.

I’m definitely not your level of brave, but I wish I was. Who is the lady?

When you get to my age a hanging toilet is a blessing for when cleaning, so much easier.

Davros · 08/03/2026 23:39

@Lemondrizzle4A I probably am at least your age! To me, cleaning round the toilet is just as easy as cleaning under it and they look so much nicer (imo)

Thank you @Davros I am - for years we collected Art Nouveau stuff and even had a Liberty sideboard we named Arthur after Mr Liberty 😍😂
@Itsokaytomorrowisanewday - yep, we aren't afraid of colour/pattern! The lady is something I copied/adapted from a piece of art I admired 😉
