Carpet storage : what sort of bag to go in the shed?

Hi all, I have a medium roll of leftover carpet which I want to store in my shed. Anyone know how id wrap it and with what? The carpet people said it would be useful to keep but I wasn't sure how!

Ask the carpet people or use your search engine.

The carpet supplier probably has left over plastic wrap, tube shape, just right for your requirements.

Ring and ask. Better than going to landfill.

Use heavy duty plastic and try and roll it. Seal up every single bit of plastic to avoid anything nasty camping out inside the roll. We’ve just had an expensive rug delivered and this is how it was packaged. A big solid cardboard cylinder down the middle if you can source one.

I see that it could be useful, but really, what is the, actual, likelihood of you patching a carpet? @HellybellyMelly

It's one of those, keep it, just in case scenarios and most probably why our homes are full of crap 😉😄

I wouldn't keep in a shed, I've just emptied a lot of 'just in case' items from my mum's she'd, they're almost trashed, mouldy, damp and Confused chewed.
Do you have room under a bed? Back of a wardrobe?

PigletJohn · 06/03/2026 13:45

In a shed it will probably become damp and mouldy, especially if it is on the floor.

Only the very finest sheds have a DPM incorporated in the base concrete, and detailed into the walls,

NamingNoNames · 06/03/2026 13:48

Could you use it or store it in a box room or something.

its just being stored there, not on the floor

Get some rubble bags, which can be cut up to make sheets of plastic if needed, and duct tape.

I meant, rolled up, on the floor.

Unless you seal it completely it will either get damp and mouldy or eaten by insects.

I would probably put some silica gel sachets in then put two bags back to back on it depending on how long it is, then seal all the joints wilth tape, then put another two bags on top.

Remember if anything rips the plastic (garden fork tool etc) it will be finished.

Loft is probably a better place to store it, less chance of the cover being ripped and fewer insects.

This. You will never ever use it. Some years later you’ll be moving out and you’ll then take it to the dump. Just do it now.

CatherineHeathcliffe · 06/03/2026 15:42

Trust me. In five years time you will be taking a damp mouldy carpet full of mouse droppings and insects to the tip. Im speaking from experience
