I think I'm forming an attachment to a door!!!

I have no idea how old my doors are, the house is 130 years old and while I don't think the doors are original they are certainly old.

I was all set to buy new ones but my partner suggested we could try and refurbish the originals. I wasn't convinced but the weather's been nasty all year so I have plenty of time.

I took the living room door off it's hinges (It was surprisingly heavy) and gave it a good clean and a going over with the orbit sander. I was using wood filler to fill in some of the gaps etc and I began to appreciate the work that went into making it. It's obvious it wasn't made to go in a stately home, everything about it is a bit wonky but it does give it a bit of charm and it is solid.

There's a series of small holes that go around the outer edge at regular intervals on both sides which confused me. My boyfriend said it's probably where they had sheets of hardboard nailed to each side to give them a "modern" clean look that was popular in the 1960's. You can even see where the original latch use to be and where it's been patched over. This door has been through a lot over the years!!

I think I'm forming an attachment to a bloody door!!! The thought of throwing away something that's been around for so long, that some long dead man made with his bare hands using real skills is making me feel a bit sad.

It's back on it's hinges now, It's been painted, it has new silver door knobs to replace the old brass ones. But it looks like what it is, an old door with a new coat of paint.

I'm torn between keeping and doing the same with all the other doors or buying the new ones I originally intended. My partner even said we can give them a Viking funeral in the back garden.

What do you guys think, original charm or modern perfection?

Original charm

AppropriateAdult · 26/02/2026 16:32

Keep it!! Your house is 130 years old, it doesn’t need 21st century doors.

RubyFatball · 26/02/2026 16:33

I’d keep that one and its stories. Upgrade the rest.

EmeraldRoulette · 26/02/2026 16:34

Original charm

But I appreciate that's a lot of hard work for you.

JellyMouldJnr · 26/02/2026 16:35

New doors will be much more cheaply made, probably hollow in the panels. Please keep the old ones!

TamarindCottage · 26/02/2026 16:35

Sounds great. May we see your door?

Tortephant · 26/02/2026 16:37

Keep them but strip the paint and don’t sand or fill, you will harm them. Also, get proper hardware, or polish what you have. That will elevate them even more. No shiny silver. If you really don’t like the brass then sell them, they will be in demandz

FranticFrankie · 26/02/2026 16:44

Sounds lovely!
Keep them all- original charm 😍

Papricat · 26/02/2026 16:46

Door therapy perhaps?

DrPrunesqualer · 26/02/2026 16:51

I hear you as the owner of a 220yr old house. My doors are def not original but it pains me to buy new ones..... actually more to do with not being standard size, taller than normal etc.

DrPrunesqualer · 26/02/2026 16:54

Watch out for lead paint if you are sanding
Can recommend Peelaway for old paint removal.

Owly11 · 26/02/2026 17:04

Keep them. Why on earth would you want to replace them?

jojogwangwan · 26/02/2026 17:11

Dont Change them ! Our house is over a 100 years old and i bloody love it !

LibertyLily · 26/02/2026 17:12

Definitely original charm!

Our Georgian cottage had all its doors (except the front door) replaced with those awful flat, hollow things when the previous owner renovated in 1965-70. Bloody sacrilege especially as they removed all architrave, skirting etc too 🤬 We're now hunting down reclaimed period doors and gradually replacing.

@DrPrunesqualer love your beautiful door ❤️

SereneOtter · 26/02/2026 17:27

At first I thought this was one of those threads about people who are sexually attracted to inanimate objects. Glad to read that it was a bit more mundane 😅

TalulahJP · 26/02/2026 18:08

keep them.
new ones will be hoaching wirh formaldehyde

TalulahJP · 26/02/2026 18:08

unless you get really dear ones i mean.

Jllllllll · 26/02/2026 20:23

Original every time. It will be far better quality. My grandad was a cabinet maker and so skilled in working with wood. Gone 30 years now but I know he would say keep them!

DeathBanana · 26/02/2026 22:27

It was the nice old doors that sold me on our otherwise quite charmless house. We need to do a loft conversion but having to replace them with fire doors puts me off 😞

Suggest

Upgrading existing doors : If you have solid wood doors, you might not need to replace them. Check if they can be upgraded with intumescent strips and smoke seals to meet the 30-minute rating

Worth a try. It’s such a shame to take them out.
Id speak to building control and tell them what you want to do. Don’t let them fob you off. Some are quite resistant to accepting anything not the norm but upgrading is perfectly fine for some doors that are at least 45mm thick

Newgirls · 27/02/2026 08:55

Price up a decent new front door and that will focus the mind - can be thousands!

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 27/02/2026 09:19

Definitely keep it. Mine are all old and a bit wonky but I love them and they are part of the house.
Mine have the littles holes where they had the hardboard nailed to them too. It’s all part of the charm

Crucible · 27/02/2026 09:37

My house was built in 1934. Previous owners had an array of types, including 1970s plastic covered MDF with big panes of frosted glass (trust me any door with a massive panel of glass in the centre is ridiculously heavy, I hated it). White UPVC front door.
We replaced all with one over three panel solid wood doors and the front door is three over three panels with art deco stained glass. They're beautiful.
Keep the doors.

Crucible · 27/02/2026 09:39

Similar front door.
