Different ways of creating an annex?

Just trying to work out my options:

Buy a huge house & split it
Build an extension (where do I live in the meantime) needs PP
Build a separate annex (where do I live in the meantime) needs PP
Buy a bespoke annex (where do I live in the meantime) needs PP
Use a static caravan....potentially quicker doesnt seem to need PP
Buy a garden office/building ...potentially quicker doesnt seem to need PP
Convert a garage (where do I live in the meantime) needs PP...potentially doesnt seem to need PP

Have I missed anither option? Have I got any of these intrinsically wrong?

You done need to move out if you’re having an extension or garage conversion.
Static caravans often need PP.
You don’t need PP if it’s within a permitted development size, just building regs.

Buy a house which already has an annex!

Why can’t you live in the main house whilst building an extension/annex/buying a bespoke annex etc. where are you living right now?

There are companies that build and you don't need PP. Home lodge is one but not cheap and the lead time was around 6 months when we spoke to them. We ended up buying and then putting in planning for an annex. It's taken 18 months between architects, planning and getting a builder but will be starting before the summer. However we have had loads to do to the house as well.

What are you trying to achieve? What’s its purpose and what size space do you need? How many rooms/config?

all these will guide the best way.

We are moving into a new house with family - while we would like it to be big enough for all of us location and multiple people working from home makes this unlikely

So I won't be able to live comfortably while its happening

I need a bedroom, a lounge/kitchenette & a bathroom - we hope to convert the garage to make a workspace for me

Family are likely to be in the 'main' house

Buying a house with an annex is the dream, but so far not findable

Currently living in 2 separate houses neither of which are big enough for both families and both need to be sold to make this work

Planning is the biggest problem you will face. I can't believe that the planning isn't more supportive of multi-generational living. They don't seem to understand that family support reduces pressure on council services and benefits everyone.

In my experience the planning system is against you, so it will take time and a lot of money to get what you want. Then, once you have built it, the council tax will almost double!

Bit an annex won’t take forever to build and surely you can find a way to live all together sharing the kitchen and bathroom for the duration no? As you are planning to live in an annex you must generally get on very well worth each other

It's the working from home bit that will be tricky i think

Will there be enough rooms for everyone to work

We have booked to see some houses it looks like my workspace will be the most difficult
