Bathroom c*ck up - help me work out what to say to renovation people tomorrow

Victorian refurb. Little shower room upstairs where there already was one. The builders have put a concertina pipe on my toilet that I hate. I think it looks sloppy, will collect dust and break.

They say it is because the waste pipe is not the same size as the new toilet, and is not a modern size and isn't the right height etc. I feel annoyed they didn't tell me this or give me the option. It is only by chance the furniture is in the same order as it was in the previous bathoom, after all, I could have had it completely reconfigured. Their first design was for that, at the same price, so by that they should have moved the pipe properly.

What can I say to them? I can't live with this, it's ghastly. Does anyone know anything about it? I feel so lost and depressed with my refurb anyway and this feels awful to me.

You can get a collar that can cover the concertina bit. Only just looked but something like this would be more sightly.https://share.google/S9D6O3Yb5AyleuDpr

Yes, some sort of cover would have been my easiest solution as well.

If you don't want to see the pipe AT ALL then you need a different toilet and/or config.

Getting the tiny details just right are what sets a fabulous house apart from an average one though - it's well worth spending time on those details because people will always notice, even if they're too polite to comment.

I think you should just wait a bit @TapsOff. Every time I've renovated (many, many times) there's been something I've obsessed over and convinced myself I can't live with, then once the stress and exhaustion has passed I forget all about it.

The only exception so far is the shoddy job my husband did of tiling my bedroom floor. I tiled the guest room and did it beautifully, but when it came to doing mine he had the time and I didn't. I might have to take it up and do it again at some point.

Thanks everyone. If it was back against the wall I wouldn't mind, the problem is it's a long, thin bathroom a the top of the stairs and this is the first thing you see. I don't think I can go up the stairs each day and see this.

Yes, it has been a difficult renovation overall and I am exhausted. I am a divorced (lone) mum and scraping to afford a place near the old neighbourhood, so, feelings of inadequacy and worry.

Edited

I hear you. It’s overwhelming. But honestly this isn’t so bad. Get a bin. A little plant and it will be covered. Or box it in in 6 months if it’s still bothering you. And breathe. You’ll get there

TinyCottageGirl · 24/02/2026 09:57

Firstly - love the styles of these bathrooms, well done you! I admit a toilet flush to the wall would look nicer. Are you able to change the toilets or is this going to cost too much? Really they should've told you/asked you if this was okay before going ahead with those huge pipes on show. Or as others have suggested get it boxed in.

InMyOodie · 24/02/2026 10:01

The concertina ones do get filthy. I hate them. Normally they are only used if it needs to bend at an angle. That looks straight so could a normal pipe not have been used?

Boxing them in is also ugly but sometimes it's the only option.

Anyahyacinth · 24/02/2026 10:52

The collar sounds a good solution for dusting and then something beautiful in front of it ...if you think it needs covering still 💐 love the tiles ...it looks beautiful OP

BillieWiper · 24/02/2026 11:15

I think if you got a loo that fixes directly to the wall it would hide it? The design means any pipework with that shaped loo is quite visible. Not that I'd ever look or care if I went there!
So box it in or change loo. Otherwise it's doing some external work to pipes which probably costs more.

CoastalCalm · 24/02/2026 11:21

I would just get a white tube cut and fitted to cover it , the plumber hasn’t done anything wrong here it’s the type of toilet you chose

Cyclebabble · 24/02/2026 11:46

Box then tile. Possible to do this and seal so that one side could be easily removed if maintenance is required.

lidlcheesetwist · 24/02/2026 12:01

I have this but have covered this with a bathroom storage box and the loo brush (don’t shoot me, MN!) at one side, and with the bathroom bin at the other. Pipe is only visible if i pull both of those objects away and lean right over the sink to see it.

We have a straight pipe which looks equally ugly, DH fitted the toilet and I obviously didn't keep enough eye on him because one of the pieces is grey coloured, he said it's fine and it was a lot of bother to change it so I bought one of those white collars upthread to hide it, which still looks a bit shit imo but a bit less so
