Ground floor flats and noise

Are all ground floor flats this noisy? I live in a gf maisonette it’s basically a house with a one bed flat above, despite that every person thats lived there has had multiple young children, and the noise has been unbearable at times, currently there is a family with toddlers living up there, obviously I know how hard it is finding somewhere with rent prices etc. but im sat downstairs in my living room and I can hear screaming and crying from 2 floors up, yesterday it was literally banging things on the floor over and over again (toys?) it appears to have laminate throughout as the sound echos very badly. Are all ground floor flats like this? If you live in one is it this noisy? Especially if you live in a maisonette even better to hear if you can hear things from downstairs? My kids are at school so was looking forward to some peace as im ill but the constant screaming upstairs means I won’t get any

Laminate flooring is unreasonable. A thick carpet and underfelt are normal.

Have you spoken to landlord about the noise? Sometimes there are restrictions in leases around noise and wooden flooring. Failing that I'd offer to buy them a rug. You can get cheap IKEA ones for not too much

I haven’t complained about noise no as I don’t want to cause any trouble for myself, I just wondered if all gff were unbearably noisy

Yes, when we lived in a gff, my immediate upstairs neighbours played music at top volume and when we complained he started to stomp around and do what sounded like star jumps in retaliation. Guy was a complete prick, there was really no need.

Add to that people running up and down the stairs and slamming the main front door 🙄 Solution? We sold up which really isn't any solution but I was a basket case by the time we moved out.

Thats the thing, if you complain they often make your life worse. I had issues with previous neighbours and I know how awful neighbours can make your life so I don’t plan to fall out with anyone or make any complaints.

This. All my properties (flats) have restrictions on the type of flooring and its a breach of the headlease to have laminate/wood above ground floor level.

And managing agents do f all about it other than email the person with the laminate flooring which they then ignore. That's my experience anyway.

If anyone has got any ideas on what else I can do, please let me know.

Charltonstrek · 25/02/2026 07:53

Not all gf flats are noisy but many are. I lived in a period conversion with one flat above and I could hear them blowing their nose or tapping their wooden spoon on the pot! So if they had children yes it would have been constant noise, but that’s not to say it would have been unreasonable noise from them.

OutsideOutside · 25/02/2026 09:58

No I know, not necessarily unreasonable it’s kids noises but personally if I lived in a top floor flat I wouldn’t let my child repeatedly bang toys on the floor but that’s just me

I rented a ground floor apartment and each was laminated. When my neighbour's child was there and running around the noise was quite bad.

If they had carpet it would cushion it.
