Has anyone done this reliably? I was given a beautiful 18” plate that I want to put on the wall but don’t know how

Hi @Bigblueballoons Hobbycraft sell some wall plate hangers.
Not sure if they would be any good for you.

Decorative plates have gone out of fashion but plate hangers are still available, just make sure you buy the correct size.
Then it is just a case of mounting it on the wall. For a plate I would not use an adhesive fixing of any kind, just drill, plug & screw.

I am very strongly opposed to the plate hangers that have little claws to grip the rim. They cause chips and scratches. A narrow shelf, with a raised edge, will do less damage.

Display plates are prone to getting circular cracks. If you turn them over you will see it corresponds to the unglazed circle underneath when they were stacked for firing. I'm told this is due to differential shrinkage because this part dries out in the room when they have not been washed (meaning wetted) for years on end.
