Any architects that can help with a bathroom design question?

We're doing a loft extension and currently the floor layout is as per the picture. We're trying to work out if we have the space to have a shower with just a screen rather than a full enclosure with door, as opening it will encroach on the space and I find them a bit claustrophobic. We're not sure this will be possible however without water going everywhere. Because of the sloping ceiling it's likely that the shower screen couldn't be much more than 600mm. Making the bathroom a bit bigger is a possibility but creates an issue in the bedroom with the space between the bed and window too small (all beds seem to be about 220cm in length so we'd only be left with about 85cm clearance). Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks @minipie. I really want to avoid anything that feels claustrophobic! And yes, I did like the first plan in terms of looking at the window from the bid. In that plan we originally had the wall a bit further forward to allow a bigger bathroom (as you suggest) but that would leave only about 85cm clearance between the end of the bed and the window, which I think would be too tight.

Check out sliding screens - not because one will fit - but because the access width into the shower can be narrow and they could give you an idea about what might work? Your shower is 1600 but you might only need 450-490 access width and if you’re really worried get a screen with a short rotating flap on the corner to deflect water away from the opening. My parents have one of these on a standard screen for a walk-in, but you’d probably need a bespoke screen made due to the roof slope? So you can have whatever size you want - do post updates!

Thanks everyone. We went up to see the shell loft space this morning and measured everything up which was so helpful. (I struggle with spatial awareness lol!). We've decided to go for the first layout with the bed facing the window. I think the bedroom would just feel too small if we did the other layout. Instead we're going to push the wall forward and create a slightly larger bathroom and do a wet room with wide area (like a few of you suggested). Problem solved! The area around the bed and window in the bedroom will be quite tight, but with a different bed (that isn't as long) I think it will work. The builder seemed to think this was by far the best option and he's done hundreds of lofts so fingers crossed!

Good that the dilemma is solved

you might want to look at beds asap
Doubles can be shorter @ 1900mm
wider beds you may find will need to be specially made.

So we're planning to limit the bed to the size of the king size mattress as much as possible - so not much longer than 200/210cm (most seem to be around 223cm). My husband's pretty confident he can build it (he's currently building my daughter one to fit an awkward space).

You can get some nice upholstered beds that are basically a divan base plus headboard - these are almost no bigger than the mattress.

Thanks @minipie we'll take a look
