Windows - Agate grey vs White

Hi all!

We need to replace all the windows in our first house a 1930s semi, as the current aluminium ones are essentially on their last legs.

I was absolutely set on agate grey flush sash, but now I’m having a wobble and wondering if white would actually look better/be more in keeping with the house.

It’s a semi-detached and our joint neighbours have white windows. Part of me thinks white is more classic and safer, but I do really like the look of agate grey and it feels a bit more modern.

I’ve attached some mock-ups (done on ChatGPT) of our actual house showing both options. The glazing bar/panel configuration wouldn’t be exactly the same as shown as we’ve chosen a slightly different layout, but it gives a general idea of the colours.

Would love to hear thoughts! Thanks :)

Every time I see grey windows it just screams fad and that it will date. I'd go white.

Tortephant · 18/02/2026 16:04

White. However as aluminium a really really dark grey could work.

Advocodo · 18/02/2026 16:09

White.

KermitTheToad · 18/02/2026 16:09

We had grey( anthracite) in our old house. Hoping to replace the existing ones in our new house to anthracite once we are settled.

I was advised when I got my windows done i could have any colour i wanted but he said "white will always be in, other colours seem to go in and out" and it is true

dubbie · 18/02/2026 16:32

I love the grey. White is so predictable (and boring). We have white :(

HappyFace2025 · 18/02/2026 16:34

White

muddyford · 18/02/2026 16:35

White for me. Grey looks very institutional would put me off buying the workhouse.

Eestar · 18/02/2026 16:37

I agree that grey will date badly in 10-20 years. White is not the most exciting but you might be less likely to regret it if it's your "forever home"

doglover90 · 18/02/2026 16:47

The grey is awful. Go with white!

Anjo2011 · 18/02/2026 16:48

Another vote for white.

BotterMon · 18/02/2026 16:51

Unless it's natural wood, white every time. Grey looks like an office building or a hospital

PickledElectricity · 18/02/2026 16:52

If this is your ~forever~ home then go with grey but if you're going to want to move in 5-10 years' time then white to save yourself the headache.

White for me but if you go with grey you'll have to paint the house something else. It's a cream colour (warm) and grey is a cool colour, so it's clashing.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 18/02/2026 16:53

White. I’m not a fan of the grey everything that’s been going on in the last few years. Grey windows and grey rendered walls is too much and very dating. Also I don’t like grey or black windows in most Victorian or Edwardian houses. It just looks wrong.

HeartyBlueRobin · 18/02/2026 16:56

Another vote for white. I read the sun is reflected off white rather than darker colours so they last longer. I don't know if it's true but the fact brown was in not that many years ago has put me off ever picking a colour other than white.

TeaAndStrumpets · 18/02/2026 17:01

Agate grey is actually quite a soft pale greenish colour. We are having it in our new house to complement the red/orange brickwork.

I think dark grey would be quite harsh on an older property, and you have to imagine how it would look with internal decor. All my favourite colours indoors go with agate grey.

rwalker · 18/02/2026 17:08

Grey is a trend it will soon look as fashionable as brown wood grain frames that now look very dated

personally I’d go from black classic look striking and not a trend so it won’t go in and out of fashion

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 18/02/2026 17:11

white windows like white bathroom suites will never date other colours are trends

the wood look brown now looks very dated when once it was the way to go, white ones are safe

pariswindow · 18/02/2026 17:15

Wasn’t there a similar thread a few years ago where an architect advised white as that reflects heat? She said coloured frames absorb heat and distort more easily, damaging the fabric of the building??

user8539762897 · 18/02/2026 17:15

White - the Grey will age, particularly the very dark grey. I actually like the grey in your photo, but whites a safer bet.

littlehyena · 18/02/2026 17:17

I think the white looks better on this house.

PigletJohn · 18/02/2026 17:37

I am not a follower of fashion, but it seems to me that grey windows and doors have passed their time.

bickering · 18/02/2026 22:39

Not what you asked about but the fenestration layout (size and arrangement of panels) isn’t the most attractive. Theres a lot of frame to glass and the panel sizes aren’t going to be in keeping with a 1930s house. Try different manufacturers and try out lots of different things to get a pleasing layout. My mum always regretted not doing that in her last house - felt she’d ruined the kerb appeal. On colour I’d also go white

Davros · 18/02/2026 22:45

White 🥁

SpigTheFish · 18/02/2026 22:46

White is classic, grey will date badly.

Also think about changing your pane layout to a classic 1930s style.

A period door would be better too.
