Please help -2 options from builder re lounge wall- inc diagrams

Hi all helpful MNers.

We are having the lounge extended and have got two choices about what to do with the back wall. Basically the interior of the new extension part, once it's plastered and ready to paint, it will come into the room very marginally more than the existing back walls. So we either 1- have a small dip from new part to old part, or 2 - they fill over the existing walls to make the whole thing level. Sorry for such awful explanation. Hopefully the pics will help.

So do you think 1 or 2 is best.

Also, pics don't show but there will be a steel up at the ceiling above the point where wall of previous room has been extended. Not sure how this affects things.

Thanks to everyone who is trying to help me. I knew it was going to be a tricky one..I'm going to upload pics taken looking at either side of new extended bit. Got a feeling for the wall opposite fire pl ace the difference in level of old and new wall won't be easy to see but perhaps you can zoom in a little .

I think the depth of the alcove will be visible.

I must be a dream to advertisers..When people say infill I think "yes that's got to be best". And when someone says no, keep it quirky I think " yes that's got to be best.

How do I know what's best ?

Have a vote amongst the other people who live in the house?

I think pp who is suggesting keeping it is also suggesting doing something with it and you need to decide if there is anything that works. Just keeping the unevenness won’t add much

Thank you. Yes I could ask the kids, ( adults), I suppose. Not that I really think it's their thing, this kind of interior dec thing.

Maybe there is no right or wrong. On the one hand I think it makes sense to have a dip or whatever the word is on both sides of the room, and below where the steel will be, but if we end up with a sofa there, a largeish gap could really get on my nerves I suspect. Problems, problems :)

I assume you don’t / won’t have any change in levels ( heights ) between old and new floors. ie a step up or down between them. I can’t tell what’s going on with the new floor ( are we seeing a screed there )

In terms of the glass option to separate old and new walls as it’s already built it's bit late now anyway.
Wasn’t aware the work had been done.

Perhaps do ask family but tbh id just do what you like
you either like the definition between old and new ( stepped wall ) and to reflect the wall opposite or you’d prefer this wall to be flat.

Appreciate floor question isn’t relevant just interested.

Ok
wasnt aware you were in a conservation area.
However if you can get a new window approved this is what I mean.
Excuse the crappy pic. We draw on computers these days and would you believe I struggled to find a pen🤣🤣 or indeed a bit of paper

Edited

That room diagram is my idea of hell. So many broken surfaces, no continuity, zero thought for furniture or art placement. The problem is not the crappy pic, it’s the design.

Wow 🤣🤣

The walls to the right of my diagram and on the top of OPs are existing walls and standard for older buildings incorporating fireplaces.

The extension to the top incorporates a glass divide between old and new. No in out in out.
I don’t think old buildings are for you perhaps.

If anyone has anything further once you've seen a picture from today, I'd still be interested in any more views.

I’m still team infill. It will make the room so much more harmonious and easier to decorate. Especially as the ceiling is low and you’ve got alcoves around the fireplace, you need that long straight wall.

Bruisername · 27/02/2026 18:33

I’m still team infill but would be interested to see the behind view and the doorway

How deep is the gap?

Think it's going to be about 3 inches when they've plastered it.

What’s the doorway like? Can you show the whole room?

This is the view from behind, as in taken from the double doors. the one I posted earlier is the view from the main doorway in from the hall..

What’s on the right with the curtains? I thought that was where the entrance was but is it a window or external door?

That's the weird small bay window thing

Bruisername · 27/02/2026 20:13

Oh i see

I've changed my mind then and wouldn’t infill unless you cover the window up!!

3 inches is deep enough for a shelf which could be quite handy behind the sofa for a cup of tea or charging your phone etc

DrPrunesqualer · 27/02/2026 20:53

Yep
Direct relationship with the beam over
Works well I think 👍

Aluna · 27/02/2026 21:05

I wouldn’t. I don’t think you gain anything by infilling, it will just make the original room feel narrower.

RememberBeKindWithKaren · 28/02/2026 08:41

@DrPrunesqualer just so I'm clear - you think keep as is and don't infill?

I think it might be worth remembering that when decisions are this hard, it probably means that either outcome is very reasonable.
It might be time to just go with your gut feeling and then stop thinking about it.
