Quote for driveway

OneGreyBiscuit · 14/02/2026 14:22

Hi I've just had a quote of £1900 to dig up existing driveway (about the length for 1 1/2) cars, supply materials (membrane, hard core, gravel) and make good including removal of wooden gates. Does this seem reasonable? I know I should get 3 quotes but time is an issue and I know this person's work. Maybe I'm out of touch but thought it would be around £1000 or was I being optimistic?

Sounds cheap including material.

Shitwithsugar · 14/02/2026 14:44

As long as they are a reputable firm and not someone knocking on the door.

Yes they are, I know of two people who've used them before

That sound like a good price. The main issue with drivework, like scaffolding, is avoiding dodgy
geezers. Do you know the other people well enough to ask how much they paid?

Thattimenow · 14/02/2026 15:01

Good price!

DavidPeckham · 14/02/2026 15:24

As per others, if anything that seems cheap rather than expensive. Labour alone if two chaps could be 2-3 days work then add the materials, dispose of waste etc. Price includes VAT?

They didn't have their driveways done, more gardening work. I wouldn't have thought there would be any scaffolding work involved, just a digger

He said he could get it done in a day with a couple of people. The price says £1900 total so hope there's no hidden extras.

That sounds too cheap to me.

We are having our entire front garden dug up and block paved. £6,000 for everything. The guy came and quoted this morning. Reckons it should take three days.

This guy has been coming to us for at least 15 years, asking if we want the driveway done. We've always said yes, but had other things we need to do in the house first. I think he was shocked when we rung him saying - yes, let's go ahead.

He has done at least five driveways in our Close (22 houses), so I'm pretty confident he'll do a good job.

Seems really a lot for effectively just a one day dig up and clearance, what are they going to do with the materials they supply? Are you going to lay a new drive yourself afterwards?

Ok there you go. In the absence of exact sizes you could split the labour and materials 50/50 so £950 for three blokes for a days work to include all the tools, van diesel, company insurance, VAT if paying. He might take a few hundred with a couple of hundred and pint to each of the two labourers? I think sometimes people look at this as £1900 a day is millionaire money but by the time everyone has had their cut it really isn’t. Anyway. I don’t think you are being ripped off at all as long as the finished product is good.

SaltedPotato · 15/02/2026 02:41

We paid about 3k for our drive to be dug up etc and then tarmac placed. That is about 1 car length and about 1.5 cars wide. 1.9 sounds cheap to me.

Edited

They will be laying the materials as well, not just supplying them

Sounds reasonable. Especially if they don’t have their own digger and have to hire. I’d ask to pay cash to knock the vat off and make it cheaper

Dutchhouse14 · 15/02/2026 09:31

That sounds cheap.
Ive just had a quote for 12.5k for a long narrow drive you can get 3 cars, same price for resin or block paving- im now thinking gravel!!!

Please say you’re not digging up a lovely front garden with grass and plants and replacing it with block paving? That would be a real shame.

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 15/02/2026 11:11

We had our drive done - we can get three cars length on it. Dig up the concrete, lay sand and block pave it for a car’s width. £7,500 plus VAT. A hard landscaper, who was recommended by our builder to build a new patio, after the extension. He did an excellent job. The builder told us, many scammers do drives and to be careful!

Unfortunately, needs must. We live opposite a school and parking is utter chaos down our street. We have three cars in the family, and the driveway only holds one car, so we need additional parking

We will have lots of plants, bushes and flowers in tubs and troughs, though, chosen to encourage pollinators.

And a large area of grass in the back garden.
