This or that? Detached house vs semi detached

What are your thoughts? Which would you opt for?

Victorian semi has character, on 3 floors, 4 double bedrooms, lovely hallway, high ceilings. Longer narrower garden. . Parking may be an issue as only one space, no garage.

detached is 1960s, 3 double bedrooms, in cul de sac with garage and parking for 2 cars, quiet area, kitchen and dining room at the back could be knocked through to make one larger room. Small garden.

both same price

Three floors (all that climbing) and high ceilings (all that heating) would put me off. Do you really need 4 double bedrooms?
I’m in team detached. Parking would be easier too.
We have 4 double bedrooms (same family as you) and have never used the 4th except for storage. I’d struggle to go back to a semi and would always look for a downstairs loo which you haven’t mentioned.

If you have adult children, I would also be factoring in whether you plan to move again or not. If not, access to public transport and a local shop would be an important thing. My quiet cul de sac of detached houses is full of older people struggling because they are reliant on their cars.

I lived in a cul de sac once. Never again.

Constant parking wars, kids playing out in the street noisily until really late (teens)

I live in a Victoria semi now and before this house lived in a 1960s house. The Victorian property is beautiful but oh my it’s a money pit. And freezing! We only moved here for the schools and it was what we could get for our money. I deeply miss our trouble free 1960s property!

Detached

whiteroseredrose · 14/02/2026 13:57

Until a few years ago I would have gone for the Victorian house. Great character.

We live in a semi and all was well until a family moved into the adjoining house. They have two small boys and they are always screaming and shouting. I often WFH on phones so it can be distracting. On one the customer could hear them. So now I’d go for the detached!

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 14/02/2026 14:36

I’d prefer the Victorian option and prefer to surround myself with tasteful architecture
I really don’t like 1960s properties and also wouldn’t ever want to live on a cul de sac

WildFlowerBees · 14/02/2026 17:04

What do you live in currently? Detached, plus there’s a garage and parking so you’ll not have to find a spot on the street.

ZanyMaker · 14/02/2026 18:30

Do you or your partner/husband WFH, i.e. would office space make things more comfortable? Likewise, do you need to accommodate visits from extended family?

Personally I’m sensitive to noise so my housing aim was always detached (took a while to get there!) but some people are more tolerable of noise so would be ok in a semi.

angelcake20 · 14/02/2026 18:32

Detached and parking as well. Desperately trying to work out how we can afford to get away from
our noisy neighbours.

User74939590 · 14/02/2026 18:32

I grew up in a detached house and moving into attached houses in my 20s was a culture shock, I certainly wouldn’t want to live next door to someone if I could help it.

Nereidd · 14/02/2026 18:32

Detached, absolutely. It's not just the noise aspect, it's the horror stories I've read on here about neighbours doing work on their property which has affected the neighbouring houses structurally.

Fearfulsaints · 14/02/2026 18:39

Detached with parking for me.

Plus i like the character of 60s homes. Theres more than one type of character, i like all that mid century modern furniture that works well in the cleaner lined spaces.

tinyspiny · 14/02/2026 18:55

Detached , parking and a garage for storage swing it .
