How to set up Gas & electric for the first time

I'm moving into a rental property on Monday.
I have only ever lived at home with my family, can someone explain how to set up gas and electric for the first time?
I've heard you take a picture of the meter reading, but who do I send this to? I don't have an energy supplier, so I don't need to tell them i'm moving.
I also don't want to stay with the current supplier of the new property, so I don't wish to set up an account with them.

Do I send the meter reading to the new company that I want to go with? Or does the meter reading get sent to the current supplier? Do I still need to inform the current supplier that I am the new tenant and do not wish to set up an account with them?

Thanks in advance

Hi OP, how exciting! congratulations.

Yes, you will have to take over the existing supply whilst the switch happens to your chosen supplier. Take a photo for your record. The letting agent should send your details to the current suppliers along with the move in reading. Once you have the keys you can contact which ever supplier you choose and they will deal with switching over. You will need a metre reading to submit to both suppliers on the day of switch over. You will then get a closing bill for the couple of weeks you are with the existing one. If you have a water metre then check that too although you won't be changing. The agent should do this and list it in your inventory, but always best to do your own too. best wishes for your new home.

I appreciate you don’t want to stay with existing supplier but it could be easier for you

no new supplier will take you on with debt which you are probably likely to be in based on previous resident

their current supplier wanted meter readings and proof of when I actually moved in. They then started my new account with them from that date

doesn’t stop you moving in the future but just made it so much easier when I moved in
