A house on the road I grew up on is for sale. I want to move!

I grew up in a semi rural village, my dad still lives in the house and my brother in the same village. It’s rare for houses to come up for sale but one of my dad’s neighbours has. It needs work, it overlooks the farmers fields but the location is lovely.

Only issue is our house is not yet for sale, we haven’t finished decorating upstairs to refresh it. It’s not awful but needs some minor bits doing. The garden is lovely in spring summer but the borders aren’t complete.

A concern I have is the farmer selling out to a local developer, dad knows him well and thinks unlikely I’ve asked him to do some polite digging! Village population is around 500 people so your typical can’t move without someone knowing but it’s home, I love the area the peace and quiet and it’s not too far from local amenities.

What do we do?! Dh onboard although he prefers to not move at warp speed unlike me.

Do it! You can probably tart up your upstairs quite easily.

Get solicitor, or you can if you have that mindset, to do some due diligence on if the fields are in any form of long term potential development land.
also, farmer may not intended to Seel but what about his kids or grandkids?
having said that any large development will be years in the planning and even longer in delivery so you can enjoy time there and move later if anything materialises

You don't need to do your upstairs. People will change it anyway. Just make sure it's clean.

Don't let this opportunity go by for the sake of that

I’ve requested a viewing, dads in his 80’s and so it would nice to be closer since mum is no longer with us. It’s also an older road with no young families the peace is absolutely bliss, I love going home and soaking up the silence.

Check the local authority local plan to see whether the fields have been allocated for housing

Totally get this, and, at some point his home is yours/could be. What if you waited? This is not meant to offend or upset in anyway whatsoever ever. Move now to be close and on hand is a totally valid option that I support. Just offering a different perspective if the village, as you imply, is what’s important to you.
