Removal of lamp post and road sign in front of drive

Hi,
We are in the process of purchasing a house. I have noticed that there is a lamp post in front of the drive located in the middle. There is also a sign post a bit further indicated a bend also in front of the drive.
If we contact the council, would they agree to move or remove it for us? I understand there may be a fee to do this.

I doubt they would move a lamppost. Confused

BeaTwix · 25/01/2026 00:29

Is it actually a driveway?

seems odd to have a lamppost in the middle if it is.. this set up would make me think it’s an unofficial driveway hence the lamppost positioning.

Diagram please 😀 better still, street view picture.

I would check that highways have given permission for this drive , driveway permission comes from highways who are part of county council not borough council

This. You might end up having to close off the drive. There are strict regulations about driving over pavements in case there are gas pipes or other structures underneath - hence the need for permission to install. Is there a council installed dropped kerb in place?

'may be a fee'

Lol

Dont worry there wont be any fee because they wont move it.

This. Has your conveyencing solicitor checked re the "driveway"?

SalaDaeng · 25/01/2026 00:51

"Unofficial" = " Illegal".

SpringsOnTheWay · 25/01/2026 00:52

my council have removed a lamp post that cased an obstruction to a driveway.
massive expense to the home owner, who was developing the garden into a small housing estate.

Pryceosh1987 · 25/01/2026 01:14

I highly doubt it. The council is the council. They can oversee everything on the street. I see it as a plus, you can save on eletric at night.

Wrong. Councils often will move lamp posts if you pay them. A friend of mine did this when she got a dropped kerb and driveway installed. I’m not sure what they charged her.

The fact this hasn’t been done already suggests this driveway hasn’t been done with done either the proper permissions and a dropped kerb.

Speak to the council OP to check all this out and see if they would move it.

It very unusual as all the way down the street the lamp post are installed in between houses this in is in front of the house in centre. There is a drop kerb to the left with a small opening for car access. The rest of the drive has a low wall in front and just in front of the wall is the lamp post on pavement.
We want to remove the wall to have allow more cars in the drive and widen the access.

No chance. The rest of the 'drive' isn't a drive if it has a wall in front of it. If you even got the lamppost removed (you won't) there's no guarantee that the council would agree to you paying for an extended dropped kerb.

Elbowpatch · 25/01/2026 13:19

My advice is to contact the council and ask they would agree to move or remove it for you.

MagpiePi · 25/01/2026 13:22

They might agree to move it if you want to widen a driveway but it would only be moved, not removed.

There is also a sign post a bit further indicated a bend also in front of the drive.

Not sure what this means exactly…but triangular warning signs have to be a specified distance from the hazard, so again, it could probably be moved a small distance.

Obviously you’d have to pay for all the works.

The fact the lamp post is in front of your house rather than between the houses like the rest of the street makes me wonder if it was moved before to allow the existing dropped kerb and drive to be installed? Or there could be other underground services (gas pipes, water main, sewer) that mean the lamp post can only go in its current location.

Road signs often have to be a specific distance from the hazard/ junction/ whatever it’s warning about, so that could be difficult to relocate.

If you wanted to remove the wall and widen the access, you would need to apply to the council for the new dropped kerb even if the lamp post wasn’t there, so it’s worth asking the council if that is possible.
