How much did you pay to remove moss from roof?

Hi looking to remove moss on roof of a 3 bed semi detached house. Has anyone had their roof done professionally or recommend a strong cleaning product youve used yourself which was effective.

Thanks

We've not had it done (purely as the car broke so needed to redirect funds) but we were quoted 450 which i thought was very reasonable. Company did have their own scaffolding tho and that was all by hand as didn't want ours jet washed. Included a treatment and gutter clearing. I will book that in when I have more funds to spare

We were quoted 2k! That was a local guy who said scaffolding would definitely be needed. We decided not to go ahead.

Had it done on a 3 bed semi 10 months ago - £1500. (Real kicker was then found out we needed new roof anyway 😭)

Wow amazed at some of these prices! My house is a terraced but its very wide, roof is huge!

Glittertwins · 24/01/2026 17:53

When we had the roofer out before Christmas to replace broken tiles, he said that someone who had the moss cleared off their roof then found out they had to replace a lot of it as it had leaked after the removal. He did alright financially out of it but cautioned me against doing it (he wasn’t responsible for moss removal).

MunicipalDarwinism · 24/01/2026 17:55

I would be wary. It is not always a good idea.

How old is the roof @mmsnet1 ? Is your house older or newer?

Lifelover16 · 24/01/2026 17:57

Choose carefully- preferably use personal recommendations.
We are friends with an elderly couple who used a franchisee of a large company. They blasted off the moss and cleaned the gutters using a pressure washer, did a good job except for blasting all the moss and debris onto the roof of their neighbours conservatory.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 24/01/2026 18:02

We did this last week - we had a quote for some other roof work with and without the moss removal (plus gutter clearing because why not) and the difference was about £500.

They did it by hand but didn’t need scaffolding as our house has 3 separate different level roofs so they could climb among them using ladders.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 24/01/2026 18:06

We have had a quote for £1000 to do house and garage plus add a herbicide(?) to prevent it coming back. Thats scraping it by hand as a pressure washer would be too harsh for an old roof.

MunicipalDarwinism · 24/01/2026 18:08

Worth a read. It does seem like moss removal could be a bit of a fad:

We paid £500 for our house roof and the roof of our detached garage. Our house is a 5 bed detached but a newbuild one so not massive footprint.

That was for hand cleaning and gutter clearing, not jet washing. No scaffolding, they went up on long ladders.

mydogisthebest · 24/01/2026 18:29

We were going to have this done last year but were advised not to by 2 roofing companies

Cheersminesalargeone · 24/01/2026 18:31

Be careful neighbours had it done then few months later the roof started leaking, apparently the moss often plugs the leaks. Personally I wouldn’t have it done.

RedRiverShore6 · 24/01/2026 18:33

We thought about having ours done but then read about it might leak afterwards, we didn't bother

Noseyoldcow · 24/01/2026 18:34

On the basis of how good Wet and Forget is on my brick drive, I’d take a look at their products. One application keeps moss away for ages, at least a year or two in my case, although my drive is not particularly shady, so that helps. Best applied to a thoroughly dry surface, so you’ll need to wait for a dry spell, and obviously don’t spray on a windy day. The Rapid application one attaches to a hose, and is supposed to reach up to 8m high, so you might be able to apply yourself from on the ground. And no, I don’t work for them, I’m just a very satisfied customer!

Barrellturn · 24/01/2026 18:35

It's like your own air filter and mini wildlife reserve. Unless you have so much moss the roof will cave in I wouldn't bother.

Gooseyloopey · 24/01/2026 18:39

its not something I would have done. Have had neighbours who had had big problems with their tiles after this

Yep, pretty much what our roofer said!

Edited

1930s house, im happy to spray and leave something onto the moss rather than get a professional removal with high pressure tools

just looking to see what chemical is effective to leave on
