Anyone had new windows recently?

We really need new windows! Wood is rotting in places. However, I'm hesitant to get people in to quote, if it's outrageously out of our reach price wise, as I don't want to waste people's time.

Can anyone give me a rough idea of what new windows cost these days? We have 2 bay windows and 6 normal windows.

TIA!

If they are all proper wood windows then find a specialist joiner to repair them. It will cost a lot less and is almost certainly possible. Do not look for joiners/window companies that will want to sell you new ones, you really don’t.
re price of wood, will depend a bit on where you are and who you use and if you are listed/conservation and so on. If you post your approx location you may get some recommendations.

If more than 75% of the frame needs attention then replace, anything less then repair.

We had ours done 18 months ago. We paid about 12 grand for 9 windows, ( 1 was a 5 pane bay, and 2 very large windows but normal) but we also got a composite new front door and the glass surround ( that was about 2k) and a sliding patio door. I can't remember the price for each invidual item but I'd say you might be looking at 7-9k. I did get quotes and they were all fairly similar

You should get a few companies out to quote. If it's affordable for you, you are not wasting anyone's time. They employ people to do this exact job

Get a quote feom a couple of local companies check they are FENSA registered) avoid the big buy now pay later companies as they are more expensive and dont generaly employ thwir own fitters and will sub contract.

Its hard to say how much your windows may be as there are too many variables ie how many openers, sizes etc

We had a bay window, 7 windows, a pvc door and a composite door done in November and it cost us £6800

Sorry didn't see you was after wood. Ours was standard double glazing, white, sash window effect.

Wishmyhousewasbigger · 21/01/2026 17:45

We had our done last April. We have large sash windows, live in a conservation area, so have to have wood. Quoted 34000 by one company, local carpenter did them for 17500. The old ones were single pane, double glazed now, no more condensation and a warmer house.

Whatever you do don’t go for one of the big national companies. They all use the same hard sell tactics. Stay in your house for hours trying to grind your down and sign on the dotted line. Massively over inflated prices which they then apply ‘discounts’ to so that you think you’re getting a bargain, but which are actually still two or three times what you should be paying.

Get a recommend local company who will come and measure up, give you an honest price without any of the BS, and then go away and wait for you to contact them
if you want to go ahead.

It’s going back a few years but when we got ours done it averaged out to £400 to £500 per window. The quote we got from
one of the big names worked out to about £1500 per window.

Thanks all. We have wood now, but want upvc. Even if we could replace the wood, some of the panes are cloudy, so we need new glass. I might ask on our local FB page for recommendations. Thanks!

It’s going to depend so much on the size and style of the window and your location.

We had the same company quote £2200 for a 1.5x1m double glazed wooden sash window, and £800 for a 80x100cm double glazed wooden casement. Both of which are reasonable prices for round here. The casement is half the size of the sash, and much easier to fit.

I agree with asking on your local Facebook group. It can be helpful to write it to encourage people to tell you who they used (rather than who has a pal who works at a window company).

I recently had a few quotes from local independents and they were all about the same - £1800-2000 for a composite front door and about £700 for each tilt and turn white uPVC window. Casement windows (opening outward) were slightly less. Other colours than white are slightly more expensive. Two of the companies manufactured the windows themselves. Ask about the technical spec as they have ratings for energy and noise reduction. Also the type of lock used on the door.

You need to be careful with Facebook as most are friends and family recommending people. We asked some local people we knew vaguely that had had their windows replaced and asked whether they would recommend them. We asked other friends if they knew anyone and then looked online for local window companies and checked them on Just A Trader. We had 3 companies to give us quotes. One was about £5000 more than the other two which were fairly similar to each other. We couldn't see how the most expensive were offering anything more than the cheaper ones. We used a really small local company. Heard bad reports of The big ones like Anglian and Everest. Very pleased with the windows and the composite front door which seems really solid.
