Kitchen design ideas 1960s house

I’m undertaking a kitchen/diner extension this year. My house was built in 1968, but I really love the country kitchen look.

I’m keen to avoid the predominately white space kitchen trend, that I think has passed now. But I can see how that would have worked really well in my house.

I guess I’m asking what your opinions are on kitchen style not matching age of house?

what is currently fashionable in kitchen design?

and are there any suppliers you’d recommend for kitchens generally?

I’m just at the beginning of the project - so I want to firm down exactly what I’m looking for.

My house was built at a similar time. I have some oak cupboards (reused) and some cream, brass knobs and handles. Tiles are plain, fairly modern, modern brass tap. Lots of plants as I love plants. It's fairly neutral I would say, not 60s, not fully 'country/rustic', just the colours and look I personally like.

Our house is Georgian but was last renovated in 1965, so the kitchen we inherited when we purchased in 2024 was of a similar age to your house @Strategies25.

It was actually solidly built from timber (painted white) and surprisingly comprised quite a few in-frame drawers, so that - despite certain aspects (worktops, chick tiles, tap etc) feeling dated/typically of that era - we've been able to repurpose some elements in our new, more period appropriate space.

So, imo, not all 1960s houses would have had your typical 'early fitted' style kitchen and I think you could definitely have a more country look if that's your preference.

Like @PrincessOfPreschool I'd possibly add in some oak - maybe a dresser? And if you wanted a nod to the age of your house without going all 'Hygena', or Plykea, you could add a pop of 60s colour somewhere, perhaps.

I love Uncommon Projects for a 60s / 70s look with colour. they are expensive but PlyKea do a similar style for less.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Your kitchen sounds lovely @PrincessOfPreschoolthat’s definitely my style! So I guess that could definitely work here.
