Cat Proof Sofas

Hopefully this is the right board to post on!
I'm looking to buy new sofas. I have cats and they do tend to have a claw at the furniture, so I want to buy something as claw proof as possible. Any suggestions for material, places to buy etc?

I had my clicked leather sofas recovered in some pet proof fabric supposed to be rejected by cats.

they need covering again. Would love to hear of something they don’t like. I heard velvet is unpopular, but I don’t like it either.

That green fabric on the sofology is exactly the stuff I had my sofas covered in. They wipe clean great but they are not cat claw immune.

Bother I was just coming on to say velvet! They genuinely don't scritch at my velvet sofa, my linen sofa however does get some cat action. Both are from Sofa Sofa and are brilliant!

I don’t think any sofa will be 100% claw proof. Your best bet is to train the cat not to do it. Buy them a scratching post and put cat tape on the areas of the sofa that they scratch until they stop doing it. Mine were trained as kittens. Maybe harder with an older cat.

They have multiple scratching posts but still prefer the sofa or the carpets! 😄

I’ve got velvet sofas and have had no issues with the cats scratching - they’re also easy to keep clean.

Mine prefer to scratch on those cardboard scratchers though and not furniture so I don’t know if they’re a great barometer…

I have velvet sofas and the cats have never scratched them. The dogs are another matter!

Mine don't scratch my sofas but it's the jumping on and off them that causes claw marks and wear. I just have to replace the covers every few years unfortunately.

I have a sort of red Tweedy fabric that seems very resistant to damage. The cats claw it a bit, but have lots of posts and other places to scratch so they don't bash the sofa too much.

Another vote for velvet. Our cat has tried to scratch it a couple of times, but it doesn't show at all. Cat hair wipes off easily too.

Seeingadistance · 18/01/2026 20:42

Yep, velvet does the trick. I've occasionally seen them dejectedly resting a claw on it, and sighing despondently before grumping off - sofa unharmed. They do then take it out on the carpet though.

Cat tape?

JamesClyman · 19/01/2026 15:05

We have had cats for 30 plus years. No sofa is cat proof.

We replaced our Ikea Ektorp that had seen much better days with another one as it fit in the space and had space for the MaleCat to hide under it .
They have a scratching post -about 5' high - which they do have a prod at .
MaleCat saunters over , claws the sofa , gets told "No" looks shocked and judged , walks off . Saunters over ,claws the sofa, gets told "No" ......
FemaleCat attacks the bedroom carpet .

The sofa cover can be replaced and looks ok. Carpet looks like cotton wool .

Sad but true! 😄
We've also had cats for many years. Our last one didn't touch our leather sofas but the ones we have now do. Guess it's just one of the joys of pet ownership...

Watching with interest -

I've had cats for 46 years, never had a problem - until our current cat (an adult stray we took in 15 months ago). He's absolutely ruined our 2 leather settees. He doesn't scratch them during the day, but does it when we're asleep at night. He has the run of the whole house, has got 3 different scratching posts (all untouched), and I have his claws trimmed every few weeks.
