Painting - I can’t seem to figure out where I’m going wrong

I use a roller but it doesn’t cover. I’ve tried all different sorts. My daughter’s room was pale pink. Painted it white and it took 4 coats and still looked patchy

How much to just get someone to do it? 😩

What paint are you using?

2026willbebetter · 18/01/2026 12:47

Are you putting the roller back in the paint often enough?

MissMoneyFairy · 18/01/2026 12:48

Some colours are harder to cover, like ppl says what paint and what rollers are you using.

Was the wall prepped properly? That's 90% of the job.

JumpingPumpkin · 18/01/2026 12:55

Good quality paint makes a huge difference.

Im thinking about painting white over a colour soon, not decided yet, what kind of preparation should I be doing? I was thinking cleaning the walls with sugar soap and filling in any nicks, what else would help?

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 18/01/2026 13:00

Are you trying to paint over satin finish?

Are you trying to paint over satin finish?

I do t think so

Ive tried using Johnson’s and Dulux

ive tried fluffy rollers and foam rollers. Ive tried really loading up the roller and I’ve tried just dipping

Can you add a photo so we can see what it's like?

Blueskiesnotgrey · 18/01/2026 13:16

I'm not expert but do all our decorating. I reckon this is the paint. I use Dulux Trade paint and have never had to do more than a quick 2nd coat with no priming, including painting over mid blue with pale lilac. Its more expensive (buy online, cheaper) but works out more cost effective in the end I think.

Unfortunately I also agree about the wall preparation. I've had the best results doing 2 days of tedious filling, washing and sanding before 1 day of painting.

Blueskiesnotgrey · 18/01/2026 13:17

Non trade paint is much thinner I think ...

Occasionalcyclist · 18/01/2026 13:17

Are you using matt or satin paint? Did you paint the wall in sections and lay off with the roller at the end of every section so all the final strokes are going in the same direction?

I agree it is worth paying the extra for Dulux Trade

Looking at the prices online there's a big difference between B and Q and buying from Dulux, is it all the same paint. Dulux is about £30 more for 5l

Danikm151 · 18/01/2026 13:32

When rolling rather than just going up and down you need to do like a w shape to get good coverage.
Also depends on the paint.

took 3 coats for me to cover hot pink.

LottieMary · 18/01/2026 13:35

Definitely mixing enough, a drill mixer is useful

The b&q good home white paints meant to be pretty decent.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 18/01/2026 14:00

A foam roller is not the right one for emulsion - the opened textured foam rollers are for textured paints and the denser textured ones are for gloss, satinwood, etc. I suspect you're just not using enough paint on the roller.

Dulux Trade is more expensive than the non-trade Dulux paint from B&Q. But it's a far better quality paint. I buy it from a local trade paint supplier who mixes the custom colours as well.

Blueskiesnotgrey · 18/01/2026 14:10

It's not where you buy it from, it's whether it's Trade paint. Has the word Trade somewhere on the tin. I don't think they sell it it B&Q (maybe just the white?)? They'll sell the normal domestic Dulux paint but it's not Trade paint. I buy it online, usually from Dulux Decorator Centre www.duluxdecoratorcentre.co.uk/ and then go and pick it up from my local Dulux Decorator Centre. Sometimes The Paint Shed is cheaper. I think Johnstone's also do Trade paint.

I can paint a whole medium size room now in 1 x 2.5 l tin of Dulux Trade. If you're having to do 3 or 4 coats with non Trade Dulux or another brand in nor sure its that much more expensive. Anyway, works for me but decorating is not cheap for sure.

I also agree about the mixing. I bought one of the ones that goes on the end of the drill and that too makes a big difference and makes the tin go further.

We're the original pink walls shiny or matt, did you clean them down before you started painting. What sort of paint have you used, satin or matt emulsion. You need emulsion rollers for walls. Can you post a pic of the patches and the tins of paint.

I wasn't clear, I mean the exact same paint is much cheaper from B and Q. I always use Dulux but not usually the trade ine

Sewaccidentprone · 18/01/2026 15:23

Wash the wall with sugar soap solution, then wipe down with warm water as part of prep work.

stir paint really well, go round the edges with a brush or corner roller, really load up emulsion roller working it in well to the Centre, do a big W on the wall, then just go up and down until it needs reloading.

the large W should leave enough paint on the wall to be redistributed by the roller. And use the widest roller you can manager. Pros use mega sizes on a pole, but I’m not strong enough to manage a massive roller loaded with paint on a pole anymore.
