We're in our 50s and, after almost two decades of happy Northern Ireland living, are considering a return home to England to be nearer family - and we need help identifying places in the South West to look at. It will be a tough move for us, as we have a pretty good situation here, and property is much more expensive over there.

We have family in north Somerset (Wells area) and we are looking at Somerset and Devon as options. We're looking to be in a slightly less rural situation than we are now (driving to get the milk, all our neighbours are cattle) so we are thinking a village with short-ish drive to a small town.
We want to be within a reasonable commute to a hospital (ideally, no more than an hour) as I'm on biologics and have semi-regular check ups. We don't want to be on top of family either, just more accessible than we are now. Main family in North Somerset but there are others in Bideford and Looe I'dlike to reconnect with.

We both work from home and like walking so inland is fine but, ideally, we'd like an easy-ish commute to the sea (we're both coastal rowers and would value the opportunity to continue this hobby plus we have beach-loving dogs). We'd like to avoid second home land, we want to be part of a community.

As much as I love Cornwall, I suspect its a bit too far away but I'll be delighted to be on its doorstep.

We're in the early days of considering whether this move is feasible, its not urgent but for a number of reasons, feels inevitable. We think, once we sell up here, we'll have a budget of around the £300/£350K for 2/3 bedrooms. Zoopla suggests this is feasible if limited on choice. I'm not a fan of new builds, we currently live in an old stone cottage which we renovated. I realise, we'll not get like for like, as we live in a much cheaper area, but we're hoping to find something similar if smaller. Any areas to look at or pointers welcome! Thank you.

From lots of experience, an hour to a hospital is too much, if you expect family to drive you to appointments. It's also too far if you drive yourself as you get older. Remember family also get older, if you're expecting to rely on them

Don't muck about, if you're moving near family, move actually near them. It's a lot easier.

We moved from N Somerset to West Cork and haven’t regretted it for a second. I’d never move back to England despite having family still living there.

DH is a cancer survivor and has regular check ups and his medical treatment over here in Ireland in the normal public health system has been vastly superior to the treatment at the BRI in Bristol. He can still get a same day GP appointment here and the hospital stays have been efficient and they feed him well despite him being a vegetarian. He was being starved in the BRI as they couldn’t even do him a cheese sandwich. I was taking in flasks of soup every day when he was recovering from Pneumonia so that he had something easy to swallow.

In your shoes, you might be better off renting for at least 6 months to see if it really does suit you living in that area. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket!

(Plus this area is the best in Ireland for costal rowing. My pal in her 50’s is a coastal rower with many gold medals and an indoor rowing world record too.)

I think you will have some very difficult compromises to make

I would trade size and practicality for ready made character - downsizing seems to be terribly difficult and I don’t know anyone who has done that and ended up happy with the result.

I suspect a village with a community where you can buy a pint of milk with reasonable access to hospital and coast and decent town is the sweet spot - ie the most expensive. A small town location would likely be a bit cheaper and practical and in a lovely area you can get out to enjoy the location even if you can’t sit on the sofa and look at it

Thanks, this, I suspect is the most likely compromise.

Edited

Thanks! Yes I'm familiar with lovely Cork and agree about the coastal rowing (I've participated in Ocean to City in the past) but that's not the direction we're moving!

Great your partner is getting excellent health care. Mine is NHS though and NI has its own very particular issues there.

Agree re: renting first. It will also free us up from being in a chain.

Lots of (negative) assumptions being made there. Not entirely helpful to be honest but you do you.

If anyone can recommend any towns or villages which might be a good starting point, bearing in mind compromises will need to be made, I'd be grateful.

We also know (a) downsizing is hard but necessary to move across (b) quality of life is important to us and (c) we're mid 50s, not mid 70s, and have an active lifestyle. Thanks!

I have friends in Tiverton, it's close to Exeter. It has a good community feel and you'd be able to buy a home with your budget.

Somewhere like Sampford Peverell would be good as it is where Tiverton Parkway is, and close to M5.

Villages and towns around Exeter, particularly on the railway lines might be good. Somewhere like Exmouth? Or Honiton?

northdevonnewbie · 13/01/2026 13:01

North Devon? Ilfracombe would be good for rowers…

They are only in their 50s! Good GP practise and NDDH is a bus ride or 30 min drive away. Although I suppose you might have to go to Exeter for biologics?

GenerousGardener · 13/01/2026 13:05

How about Blandford Forum? It has a community hospital and not that far from Poole and Swanage if you want the coast.

Sorry that's what I was thinking. Exeter feels a long haul

Maybe too far West but Tavistock and surrounds.... right side of Plymouth for Derriford, about 35mins away....

Bideford/Looe not miles away and 25min drive to get on A30 dual carriageway to the M5 and Somerset.

Easy places to launch a boat in Plymouth Sound or Saltash slipway at the mouth of the Tamar with free parking.... Dartmoor for walking, Cornwall and its beaches coastal towns nearby... Bude/Widemouth about 50mins away.

SWcurious · 13/01/2026 13:22

Thanks so much, I'll check out all those recommendations. I'm definitely starting from the hope of finding a rowing club to join.

And thanks also for comments on hospital access. I currently drive 50 mins on country roads to my nearest hospital. More if you include tractor time which is frequent enough.

NHS is under a lot of strain here too.

Biologics- I self inject but probably need to visit a hospital once a year for routines. A decent GP practice is a consideration. I've no idea how biologics are managed in England. And what is/isn't paid for (we have free prescriptions here). I'm a relatively new biologics patient and surprised to see how well that process has been working even within our very strained health service.

Consider Sherbourne. I downsized to East Devon, which is lovely, and now I'm settled, Sherbourne is the only place I've visited where I though 'Damn. Maybe I should have moved here instead.)

Plus, as I've said elsewhere, Sidmouth's nice. Hospitals might be too far.

PS South Petherton? Close to the A303.

Oh that's interesting! What is it you like about Sherborne? Can I ask where you downsized from to be in East Devon? And if you've any tips on downsizing? I could cope with not having much of a garden if there was a lot of public space to roam in. Not sure I could manage without some house roominess though cos, whilst I love DH dearly, I do like us having our own workspaces during the day!

Take a look at Portishead OP. It's near Bristol but in Somerset. It's got the Bristol Channel nearby with pebble beaches and a lovely marina. I know there's a lot of boating activity around there (although I'm no expert on that front!). It's got all the shops you'll need and quite a good community vibe.

Tamarastar · 13/01/2026 14:15

I second @ginasevern re Portishead in North Somerset as it fits your criteria re sailing, major hospitals access and is an easy drive down the M5 to your other family. It also has a railway due to open (finally!) in 2027.
However your budget will be tighter there - so you could also look at Clevedon just along the coast, or inland Yatton, Nailsea in North Somerset (there are many nice places in Somerset too eg Wells, but can be a pain for transport to elsewhere and major hospitals etc)

Im in Wellington, on Devon/Somerset border - 15-20mins to Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton; 30ish minutes to Exeter. There are minor injuries units in Tiverton & Chard.
Wellington is a small market town with a good community; we have an M5 junction, buses to Taunton; & in the next few years a reopened train station which will be on the main line between Penzance-London. Mixture of independent shops, some high street chains & supermarkets. We’re about 40mins from Exmouth which I know has a rowing club; have the Blackdown Hills to the east; Quantocks to the north west & Exmoor to the west. North Devon (& great beaches) is about an 1hr via the North Devon Link Road. Bristol is about an hour north; Cardiff only 1.5hrs; Plymouth is just over an hour & Exeter 30mins. Wells is about an hour across the Levels, & Looe is under 2hrs.
We love it here - we get access to all the benefits of Devon, Dorset etc without the crowds as Somerset isn’t as well visited.

Also wider Bristol area. I hadnt thought of that - so thanks all for those suggestions

Portishead/clevedon/Yatton etc, anywhere along the A370.

Lovechilli75 · 13/01/2026 14:54

Lyme Regis and Bridport have gig rowing clubs, maybe look at villages a bit inland. Somerset is cheaper than Dorset or Devon!
