What would you do with this space?

Outside our bathroom, on the landing we have an alcove measuring 80x70cm. What would you do with this 'dead space' ?

A diagram or photo would help, but in all our houses we've built cupboards into dead spaces, the one outside our bathroom holds towels, loo rolls, bedding, laundry etc

CarrieMoonbeams · 09/01/2026 20:29

How deep is it? And how far from the floor? And do you have cats/nosey dogs/small children who might pose a risk to whatever you put there?

Thanks yes we have a large airing cupboard opposite this space.
It is 80cm deep and 70wide.. height from floor to ceiling.
Some mind of storage I suppose but wondered what kind or if anyone had any clever ideas.

Oh I see, I was imagining a small-ish space of 80cm wide by 70cm tall! That sounds great.

We had an alcove in the living room of a previous house. It was wider though, so we made an arch at the top to make it more of a feature, put a shelf halfway up with doors on that (stored blankets, torches and candles in that bit - we were in a very remote area prone to power cuts) and narrower shelves above with just books, a lamp, candles, ornaments, photos etc. Painted it a slightly darker shade than the rest of the room to make it look deeper and more cosy. Nice in the living room of an old cottage, probably not really what you're looking for in a hallway, sorry!

No I appreciate the idea. Thank you.
My husband told me I was completely off with my approximate measurements so I've come up and measured and it's bigger. It's actually 1.2m X 1.1m.
We don't have a huge amount of storage downstairs but that's more for (too many) books but I think this space is too deep to use for books anyway.

Not if you did U shaped shelves so you use the sides as well as the back.

Oh yes v true. I half wondered about putting all towels and bedding here and changing the airing cupboard (almost double the size) into something more interesting storage wise.
Who is this person I've become?! We've moved into a bit of a doer upper but no rush about it at same time so I'm considering all possibilities.

Storage for suitcases? Or for plastic crates with Christmas decor and camping gear etc. hang a curtain of a nice fabric in front so it looks neat and then fill it up.

Sofiatheworst · 09/01/2026 21:20

Could you turn this space into airing cupboard and the existing airing cupboard into a small walk in wardrobe?

Geneticsbunny · 10/01/2026 09:47

That's easily big enough for a utility cupboard. I would stick a stacked washer and drier in and if there is enough space a small sink in some worktop. Add shelves at the top and a rail for hanging stuff to dry and you have a place to do all your washing.

I would absolutely love this but not sure if would be an easy job electricity and plumbing wise. It would be handy as laundry could just stay upstairs.. It I'd an outside wall and currently no electrics on that landing at all. I would love some kind of drying rails so maybe even that, as long as it wouldn't create mould.
Really appreciate all the ideas. Want to make best use of it. Currently washer/drier are in the garage.

I have an alcove on the hallway, but with a window so I can’t turn it into a cupboard. I have my clothes airer there through the winter so it’s not in the way in the living room.

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 10/01/2026 14:14

Leave it empty
Sometimes it’s just lovely and refreshing to have space that isn’t filled with something
A calming space of nothingness ….<and breathe>

Geneticsbunny · 10/01/2026 16:56

If you have a plan of the house I can probably tell you how feasible the washing machine cupboard is. Just a rough one would be fine. You can out an extractor fan in to prevent damp issues.

BIWI · 10/01/2026 17:04

If it’s next to the bathroom, surely plumbing wouldn’t be that much of a problem? I’d definitely explore turning that into a laundry, with the drier stacked on top of the washer.

Litlit · 10/01/2026 17:17

Built in desk/study area?
Somewhere to hang washing on a clothes horse with a dehumidifier plugged in and a curtain across to hide it all away

AltitudeCheck · 10/01/2026 21:56

Seasonal storage. Add shelves to fit large lidded storage boxes and store winter duvet/ jumpers /coats or summer clothes / duvet/ shoes etc.

Huge shoe cupboard.

Sorts gear storage, if i had this space it'd have paddleboards, wetsuits and camping gear in!

friendlyoleary · 10/01/2026 22:21

Have you a bath or shower in the bathroom? It sounds the ideal size for a shower cubicle if you needed a separate shower!

DelphiniumBlue · 11/01/2026 00:40

I’d use it for additional hanging space, for coats, suits and less frequently used items. Then shelving above and below for bulky storage.

VWT7 · 11/01/2026 00:45

A built-in dressing table area, with worktop, storage and a custom cut large mirror to fit the gap and reflect light…

Reading nook with seating avd bookshelves.

Any chance of a photo?

mikado1 · 11/01/2026 09:14

Thanks so much everyone. So many options. For now it's a very dark alcove with a filing cabinet in it.
Love the sports idea and the general shelving and the drying area. I'll take a pic.
