Anyone else looking for a unicorn?

We've been wanting to move to somewhere slightly bigger and detached for a while now but there just doesn't seem to be anything available.

Our house is probably worth around 200,000 (we live in a cheaper area) and there's plenty for sale around this price point but then it seems that everything else on the market is 500,000 plus or new builds and new builds just don't have the outside space we'd want.

I didn't think our wants were that specific but I've literally not seen anything that even looks like a possibility in 6 plus months of looking

I bought the unicorn but found out it was in sheep's clothing. I'm now hunting a real unicorn - one that doesn't cost a fortune to heat.

Which brings me to my next question. On rightmove sometimes the EPC listed is just a pretty graph but sometimes it's a proper report, is there a way/website to find out what the walls and floors are if it's only a graph?

@Pixiedust1234 Yes search epc reports, there’s a government website with them all. You search by post code. It’s one of the first things I check as it can have some useful gems of info on there.

Have you tried looking on the gov.uk site?

Not exactly, because the more expensive houses aren't what we're after either.

It seems I can have a 3 bed semi or a huge 5/6 bedroom detached but nothing in between.

3 or 4 bed detached houses just aren't coming on the market.

I feel you OP, I'm in the same boat. I have plenty of budget, but nothing fits! I'm looking for a 3-4 bedroom detached house that has a small, (but not overlooked) garden. I keep either finding houses that are way too big, or too small! I think the idea for a lot of people is to look at budget and then look for the biggest house you can afford with that, but that doesn't work for us! There's only two of us; we don't want to heat and clean a 5-bed. I am not a gardener, sometimes I see a house that's perfect, but the garden is ginormous. We could stretch the budget to about 600k for the perfect house, but houses in my search area at that price all come with bloody landscaping requirements.

I know this is very much a first world problem, but I'm starting to feel disheartened. 😞 We're pretty hard-locked on location, and there doesn't seem to be much out there atm.

Yes, exactly. We don't want something massive that will be expensive to heat, high council tax etc., just a bit more space and not attached. It's not about not being able to afford what we want, as we could afford much more than our budget, it's simply that what we want doesn't seem to come up for sale.

Ooooo thank you both. After looking at it apparently the whole street has an awful epc which if I'd known I would have run a mile. I assumed it was just this house and I could "upgrade" it, at least up to my previous house rating. An expensive and painful lesson.

Hopefully everyone will find their true unicorn in Spring Flowers

I'm in a 4bed with space and separate garage. I've been considering downsizing to a nice property, but it's impossible to find .

What I don't want;
Really overlooked garden. Too many toilets for the size of the property. Integral garage taking up living space. Neighbours too close. No room for parking. Or bins.

All that is coming on the market is new builds with everything above, or really decrepit overpriced older properties that would end up costing more than we sell for.

It's impossible.
