The perfect all over off white for walls, ceiling and woodwork

We have always been fairly traditional in our paint choices, Brilliant white matt on ceilings, coving, woodwork and doors and a colour on the walls. I used to go for quite definite colours for walls but as our current house is quite dark, most walls are painted Natural Cotton (a very light cool beige). It is definitely a contrast to the ceiling but very light nonetheless.
We are moving into a very modern renovated bungalow. Currently brilliant white everywhere, modern pale wood doors. Enormous windows so very light. No ceiling coving.
I would like to soften the brilliant white but my usual colour scheme won't really suit the house. I'd prefer to "colour drench" but with a softer white - the same on all surfaces. Main living area , dining room and kitchen all run in to each other and get both east and west light. Furnishings will not be as modern as the present owners.

Suggestions of paint colour for everywhere please

Maybe look at Dulux Just Walnut. I have just done the whole of our upstairs in that colour, did Egyptian Cotton downstairs (they are very similar colours) but prefer the Just Walnut.

Paper and pain library have a wonderful neutral pallet.

mylands also make lovely shade of neutrals

If you want one colour throughout, Wimborne White by Farrow and Ball is lovely.

If you're looking for a range of off white tones, Coat Paints have really nice inspo pics.

Nettleskeins · 02/01/2026 17:15

I think you want something like RAL Classic 9010 (Pure White)
It's softer than brilliant white.

Just Walnut will cramp your style if you use it for Everything.

Why not just live with the brilliant white if it's brand new and add some pictures and furnushings to "soften it" until it needs repainting in a few years. No need to do it yet.

Nettleskeins · 02/01/2026 17:29

There is also Dulux Cameo Silk 4.

The problem is that if you do the woodwork in something too creamy/with yellow undertone it may clash with any light neutral you put in later on or even things like light neutral sofa; the neutral will make woodwork look yellowish.

The house was renovated about three years ago and they have a lot of art work on the walls so there's going to be some touching up required. We also will have about a month to decorate before actually moving in and I thought it's a case of Paint it Now as I won't feel like doing it once it's full of our stuff.
@Advocodo I used Just Walnut in my husband's office before we settled on Natural Cotton (or Builder's Beige as our painter called it!) and i found the Just Walnut a bit purpleish.
@Nettleskeins Yellowish is my worst nightmare but I guess the paintwork and wall colour might change after time and won't match anymore.

There's a reason people use Brilliant White as it's easier than making a decision!

Little Greene Slaked Lime if you don’t mind paying for a premium brand. On the plus side LG paint is hard wearing with good coverage.

I wanted a soft white which worked in differing light conditions and aspects and this is the colour which looked good in all of them whilst having the durability/coverage of a Dulux paint.

I had umpteen whites to try which I painted on A4 sheets of paper and moved around the house at differing times until I found the one which was both consistent and soft in each location. It doesn’t look quite the same but the soft effect is as good in each location.

F&B strong white is nice. Pretty subtle but parents have it in their bathroom with a Dulux Matt white ceiling and it looks good.

PainterInPeril · 02/01/2026 18:16

Dulux Antique Cream. Warm, goes with everything.

MakeMineStrong · 02/01/2026 18:23

F&B strong white is what you’re after

Excuse lazy photos but it shows woodwork walls radiator and ceiling in several room and lights in Johnstones China clay
It comes in washable and big standard emulsion goes on easily and is a beautiful colour. I have it in every downstairs room and it looks beautiful in all lights.

I bought Lick Paint White 06 trade vinyl Matt from Screwfix. I needed an off white and was scared of leaning towards magnolia. This is a light off white but pink undertones rather than yellow. I can't see any pink, but it's a lovely warm white, I love it and have painted walls, ceiling and woodwork in it

This is it, not my room unfortunately!

Totally depends on what undertone your furniture has or you want.

If you have furniture in greens then a soft white with pink undertone would work wonders. If you have brighter clear coloured furniture something like wimbourne white would work

Htcunya · 03/01/2026 09:56

Johnstone's paints are worth a look. I have Swansong, white without being brilliant white. No yellow undertones.

Imgoingtobefree · 03/01/2026 10:13

I used to use Brewers Trade paints. Their Albany paint range is arranged with the creams at the topped arranged over the colours. So the creams with a blue tinge are above the blues, and the pinky creams are above the reds etc.

If you are keeping the woodwork, you might find the wood has a definite undertone you could match to.

Dulux Timeless.

joeninetey · 05/01/2026 15:40

Wickes own brand magnolia is what you need.

NotableI · 05/01/2026 16:06

Just had my kitchen done in Linen Wash by Little Greene which I’m really liking - it’s a very warm off-white.

Mum5net · 08/01/2026 22:10

@BruceAndNosh , please update as you move forward. I might be in exactly the same situation. Every room is brilliant white in a south facing house. I'm thinking of Johnstone's paint in a F&B shade of white. I haven't exchanged yet so just gathering info.

rosiebl · 09/01/2026 10:05

We have Crown Paint Canvas White in most of our rooms which is a perfect slightly off, warm neutral.

OliveCat25 · 09/01/2026 13:37

Another vote for F&B Strong White - in our modern house it works really well as it’s soft but with a slight grey undertone, so keeps it modern. I really didn’t want yellow undertones either
